Lemon Bay Playhouse, also known as The Englewood Community Theatre, Inc., is a non-profit community theater located at 96 W. Dearborn St. in Englewood, Florida. It was established in April 1987 by a group of local amateur actors. The organization quickly secured a rented storefront space in July of the same year and attained non-profit 501(c)(3) status. The playhouse's inaugural event, a two-performance talent night, was held in August 1987 to raise funds for converting the space into a theater. The first full production, "Play On," opened on September 24, 1987. The early years presented challenges, including finding directors, actors, sets, props, and even audiences. However, the introduction of opening night galas in December 1989 helped future productions gain momentum. By the fall of 1991, Lemon Bay Playhouse implemented group sales and whole theater rentals, and for the first time, season ticket holders were able to reserve their seats. From a modest 23 season tickets sold in the 1991 season, the number has grown to nearly 900. The theater also began building a mailing list in late 1989, which proved effective in filling seats and led to the opening of a savings account by 1992. The program book, which started in the fall of 1992 and is supported by advertising sales, has been profitable and has helped the theater make many new friends in the community. The floods in the summer of 1995 highlighted the need for a larger space, leading to the purchase of the building at 96 West Dearborn in September 1995. An open house in early October of that year saw a strong community turnout and the recruitment of many volunteers, who have become integral to the theater's operations. Through prudent financial management, profitable shows, generous donations, and grants, Lemon Bay Playhouse has made significant improvements to its facilities and paid off its mortgage in less than six years. The theater has thrived due to the support of the community and the dedication of its volunteers. By 2010, the playhouse had experienced a notable increase in community awareness and appreciation, with performances often selling out by opening night. This success has led to challenges in accommodating the growing demand for seating. The theater has also expanded its community engagement by introducing a summer theater camp for children and participating in events such as the Pioneer Day Parade. Lemon Bay Playhouse continues to be a vibrant part of the Englewood community, with a mission to provide entertainment and education through the performing arts. The organization is governed by a Board of Directors and relies on the efforts of staff and volunteers to maintain its operations. As of the information provided in 2010, the playhouse is actively seeking solutions to meet the increased demand for its performances and continue its legacy as a successful community theater.
