Peoria Symphony Orchestra

Peoria, United States

The Peoria Symphony Orchestra (PSO) is a distinguished cultural institution in Central Illinois, known for its exceptional live musical performances, innovative music education programs, and engaging community outreach efforts. The PSO's mission is to entertain, educate, and inspire through music, significantly impacting the cultural life of the region it serves. Founded in 1897 under the auspices of the Bradley Institute, the orchestra was initially known as the Bradley Symphony Orchestra. It was created with the intent to study and perform orchestral compositions from the best classical and modern masters. The orchestra was open to all individuals who demonstrated the necessary musical skill and suitability for membership. The Peoria Journal Star newspaper highlighted the orchestra's formation on November 24, 1897, noting its direction by Harold Plowe, a musician and conductor whose experience made him particularly suited for the role. The Bradley Symphony Orchestra incorporated and was renamed the Peoria Symphony Orchestra on December 5, 1916. The PSO's inaugural performance under its new name took place that month at the Shrine Temple, where the playbill included a call for financial and moral support from the citizens of Peoria—a call that has been answered affirmatively for over a century. Harold Plowe retired as conductor in 1927, and over the following 50 years, the orchestra was led by nearly a dozen different conductors. A significant period of growth occurred under the leadership of Dr. William Wilsen, who conducted the PSO from 1978 to 1999. During his tenure, the orchestra celebrated its centennial and gained national and international acclaim, including a performance at the International Bodensee Festival in Germany in 1989. Following Dr. Wilsen's retirement, David Commanday served as music director until 2008. The 2009-2010 season was notable for the audition of seven talented conductors, selected from over 250 applicants worldwide. George Stelluto was appointed as the PSO's new Music Director in June 2010 and began his role with the opening concert of the 2010-2011 season on September 18, 2010. The PSO is governed by a dedicated Board of Directors and operated by a professional staff, with the Peoria Symphony Foundation providing oversight of investments to ensure the organization's long-term sustainability. The Peoria Symphony Guild, an auxiliary group, supports the PSO and its educational outreach initiatives. The PSO's educational programs and community outreach are integral to its mission, including the Annual Student Concert, Puppet Troupe, and Young Artist Competition. The organization also offers a variety of ticketing options for its concerts and special events, such as the "Whiskey at the Warehouse" event, and provides opportunities for individual giving, corporate partnerships, and volunteering. The Peoria Symphony Orchestra is located at 101 State Street, Peoria, IL 61602, and can be contacted at 309.671.1096 for ticket purchases and further information. The PSO's commitment to the arts and community engagement continues to make it a pillar of cultural life in Central Illinois.
