Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra

Champaign, United States

The Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra (CUSO) is a professional orchestra based at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Founded on February 13, 1960, by music teachers Martha Wendt and Gilbert Papp, along with TV personality W. J. Roberts, the CUSO aimed to provide high-quality symphonic music and music education. Bernard Goodman, the first music director, led the inaugural concert on October 20, 1960, featuring Beethoven’s "Emperor Concerto" with pianist Theodore Lettvin. The CUSO has a rich history of community engagement and educational initiatives, including youth concerts and scholarships. The CUSO Guild, established in 1962, supports these efforts through fundraising and volunteer activities. Over the years, the orchestra has been led by notable music directors such as Paul Vermel, Steven Larsen, and currently, Stephen Alltop. The orchestra has received numerous accolades, including the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) award for adventurous programming. The CUSO continues to enhance the cultural landscape of the Champaign-Urbana area through live performances, community outreach, and educational programs.
