Cutting Hall Performing Arts Center

Palatine, United States

Cutting Hall Performing Arts Center is a historic venue located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, and is owned and operated by the Palatine Park District. Established as a cornerstone of the arts environment in Palatine, the auditorium has been serving the community since its inception in 1928, when it was part of the original Palatine High School. The facility is named in honor of Mr. Charles S. Cutting, the institution's first principal, who was a significant figure in the local education and legal sectors. Constructed with a distinct architectural style, the Cutting Hall stage opened on September 15, 1928, featuring hand-decorated beams by artist Gustave Bandt and adorned with six Tiffany lamps, originally powered by gas. The auditorium was supported by six pillars and showcased a stage curtain with the Palatine High School (PHS) monogram. With the relocation of Palatine High School to a new building in 1977, the old high school faced potential closure. However, community efforts led to the preservation of the auditorium, which underwent renovations to become a standalone facility managed by the Palatine Park District. The Park District's vision was to restore and maintain Cutting Hall as a venue for both amateur and professional productions, enriching the cultural offerings for local residents. The facility has undergone several upgrades, including the replacement of all 437 auditorium seats in 1997 and the revitalization of the lobby restrooms in 2013 to reflect the 1920s character of the building. Cutting Hall has also recovered from an electrical fire in 2010, which caused significant damage to the theater coordinator’s office and lobby. Throughout its history, Cutting Hall has been a versatile space, hosting various theatre companies, film screenings, children's programs, the Palatine Concert Band, and numerous other Park District events. The center has become a hub for the performing arts, offering residents the chance to engage with and contribute to the local arts scene. Cutting Hall Performing Arts Center continues to be a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Palatine area, providing quality programs and a platform for the performing arts. Its commitment to the arts and the community has made it a cherished institution for nearly a century.
