The Little Theatre On The Square

Sullivan, United States

The Little Theatre On The Square is a notable cultural institution located at 16 E. Harrison Street in Sullivan, Illinois. It was established by Guy S. Little, Jr. in 1957, with its inaugural performance being the musical "Brigadoon." Guy S. Little, Jr. managed the theatre as a commercial enterprise until 1978, attracting over 175 renowned performers such as Mickey Rooney, Alan Alda, Ann Miller, Don Ameche, Betty Grable, John Carradine, Leonard Nimoy, and Forrest Tucker. Transitioning from a commercial venture, in 1981, The Little Theatre On The Square was reorganized as a not-for-profit corporation and has since been governed by a Board of Trustees representative of its Central Illinois regional market area. This change occurred after Mr. Little decided to move on to other pursuits. The Little Theatre On The Square, Inc. subsequently acquired the theatre building from Mr. Little and expanded by purchasing and renovating adjacent buildings to serve as ticket offices, administrative offices, public restrooms, rehearsal spaces, a dance studio, and housing for the company. In 2001, a technical production facility was also added. The theatre underwent an extensive renovation in 2004, which modernized and expanded the facility, enhancing the experience for theatre-goers. This renovation coincided with the theatre's educational outreach initiatives, which began in 1997 and have since grown to include over 275 students. The program offers jazz, tap, ballet, and drama classes, and in 2004, it introduced a touring program called S.T.A.R. (Students’ Theatre Arts Reach), which brings performances to area schools. As the only Actors’ Equity Association-affiliated theatre between Chicago and St. Louis, The Little Theatre On The Square has become a hub for professional actors and stage managers from across the country. It has a significant impact on the local community, having played to over 850,000 admissions, with more than 160,000 of those being part of the Theatre For Young Audiences series. The Little Theatre On The Square was recognized by USA Today in 2005 as one of the Top 10 Places to See the Lights Way Off Broadway, highlighting its prominence in the regional arts scene. Celebrating over 65 years of live performances, the theatre continues to uphold its motto, "Little Theatre. Big Talent." and invites audiences to enjoy a magical evening of theatrical arts.
