West Edge Opera, formerly known as Berkeley Opera, is an innovative opera company based in the San Francisco Bay Area. It was founded in 1979 by baritone Richard Goodman with a mission to present early and contemporary works while reimagining opera tradition to engage and entertain diverse audiences. The company underwent a significant transformation under the leadership of General Director Streshinsky and Music Director Khuner, adopting its current name in 2014 to reflect its avant-garde approach to opera. Celebrating its 44th season, West Edge Opera has an impressive repertoire, having presented 98 complete operas that include new and unusual works alongside favorite and lesser-known pieces by renowned composers. The company has been recognized for its world, American, and West Coast premieres and has commissioned three new operas, along with several new translations and adaptations of classic works. West Edge Opera is known for its sense of community, referring to itself as a family of artists, singers, musicians, donors, and patrons. This was particularly evident in 2020 when, despite the cancellation of its festival due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company's supporters provided funds to compensate contracted singers, musicians, and stage crew. The company has staged memorable performances in unconventional venues, such as "Agrippina" at Oakland's abandoned 16th Street station in 2016 and "Frankenstein" at Pacific Pipe in 2017. In 2021, West Edge Opera participated in Cal Shakes’ Season of Shared Light at The Bruns Amphitheater, marking a triumphant return to live performance. West Edge Opera's summer festival is hosted at The Oakland Scottish Rite Center, a historic building dating back to 1926 with a grand ballroom and an auditorium designed for the Scottish Rite Masons' ceremonies. The company is committed to improving accessibility and the overall experience for its patrons, including installing handrails and creating distanced-seating sections for COVID-19 safety.
