The Missouri Symphony

Columbia, United States

The Missouri Symphony, commonly known as MOSY, is a prominent cultural institution based in Columbia, Missouri, dedicated to enriching the community through music education, professional performances, and diverse experiences. Founded in 1970 by Hugo and Lucy Vianello, MOSY began its journey as the Missouri Symphony Society with the primary mission of providing symphonic music and music education to the mid-Missouri area. Throughout its over five decades of existence, MOSY has remained steadfast in its founding mission, even as it has expanded and evolved. The organization comprises three main branches: the Orchestra, the Conservatory, and the League. The latter was established by Lucy Vianello in 1971 to recruit volunteers, a function it continues to fulfill. MOSY has grown to become a central symphonic hub in the Columbia community, with its programming historically centered around the historic Missouri Theatre in downtown Columbia. Although MOSY no longer owns the theatre, it still utilizes the venue for staff and events, including annual traditions such as the Symphony of Toys and the Hot Summer Nights Music Festival. The organization also hosts community performances and events like the Holiday Home Tour and engages in numerous educational activities, notably through the Conservatory. One of its key educational events is the annual Young Peoples Concert, which introduces classical music to younger audiences. Governance of MOSY is overseen by a Board of Directors composed of engaged and respected members of the Columbia community. The organization enjoys support from community members and businesses, including Commerce Trust Company and Shelter Insurance, which enables MOSY to continue providing exceptional symphonic performances to the mid-Missouri communities. Key figures in MOSY's history include its founder Hugo Vianello, who served as Conductor Laureate from 1970 to 1998, and Kirk Trevor, who held the position of Conductor Emeritus from 2000 to 2021. Their leadership has been instrumental in shaping the organization's artistic direction and community impact. The Missouri Symphony is located at 29 S Ninth St, Ste 211, Columbia, MO 65201 and can be reached at (573) 875-0600 or via email at info@themosy.org. The organization maintains an active online presence through various social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube, where it shares updates and connects with its audience. MOSY's commitment to the arts is further demonstrated through its various programs, financial transparency, and efforts to maintain accessibility and community engagement. The organization's website, managed by 360 CoMo LLC, provides information on its policies, program archives, and opportunities to join their email list, reflecting its dedication to service and inclusivity.
