The Lima Symphony’s season finale features one of our own as principal flutist Erin Torres and duo partner saxophonist Michael Torres bring a world premiere by award-winning composer Evan Williams to our stage. Bookending our duo are two of Classical Music’s most endearing works, Fauré’s delicately wistful “Pavane” and Dvořák’s tragic Symphony no. 7.

Music Director Andrew Crust conducts the orchestra and chorus in a powerhouse of 19th-century symphonic choral works. The first half of the program explores the darker side of imagination, from Schubert’s haunting Erlkönig to Brahms’ funeral song Nänie, which laments the inevitability of death. The program concludes with Beethoven’s iconic 9th Symphony featuring the triumphant Ode to Joy, encapsulating all that is worth living for.

Immortalized in both book and film, Mozart and Salieri come to life once again on the concert stage – not in competition but in complement. The first half of the program highlights the cosmopolitan and refined Salieri, a composer whose fame and recognition have often been overshadowed by Mozart’s vivacious and prodigious talent. Finishing the evening is Mozart’s final prophetic accomplishment: a Requiem mass. Left unfinished upon his own untimely death, this mysterious work remains one of the most powerful and profound in the classical music canon.

We will need it all for this presentation of “Wall to Wall Percussion” created and performed by acclaimed Canadian percussionist Vern Griffiths. Full of funky beats, audience participation, and inspirational ideas, this foot-stomping fast- moving percussion bonanza will have you itching to pull out the pots and pans to create a symphony of your own!

Never Break the Chain: The Music of Fleetwood Mac

Experience the many flavors of Christmas with the Lima Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. From Ellington’s bright and jazzy rendition of “The Nutcracker” to Britten’s regal “Men of Goodwill,” sentimental favorites by John Williams from “Home Alone” to Robert Russell Bennett’s lush carol settings in “The Many Moods of Christmas,” the sacred and popular come together in joyful jubilation.

Embark on a musical odyssey that embraces the past through a modern lens! Opening with Valerie Coleman’s 2021 “Fanfare for Uncommon Times”, this program presents new takes on old ideas. Gulda’s rhythmic “Cello Concerto” runs the gamut of musical styles from Renaissance Dance to Rock and Roll, German Ländler to big band jazz, and everything in between! “Oiseaux bleus et sauvages” (Birds Blue and Wild), Morlock’s playful take on birdsong, embodies a sense of mysticism. And pioneering American composer Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2 “Romantic” combines power and tenderness reminiscent of 19th century Romanticism.

Past And Present Sounds

Listen as the Lima Symphony tells captivating tales from the near to far East through musical fantasy. Opening this incredible season are the subtle and varied sounds of the Indian Tabla, drums that composer Dinuk Wijeratne describes as being able to speak – almost as if they have a tongue. Performed by master tabla player Sandeep Das, the compelling complexity of North Indian classical music combines seamlessly with the orchestra in unexpected ways. Completing this musical voyage is Rimsky-Korsakov’s Romantic masterpiece “Scheherazade”, inspired by folklore from One Thousand and One Arabian Nights.
