Coronado Performing Arts Center

Rockford, IL, United States

The Coronado Performing Arts Center (Coronado PAC) is a historic venue located in Rockford, Illinois, known for its atmospheric style architecture and rich entertainment history. Opening its doors on October 9, 1927, the Coronado PAC was initially designed as a movie palace, featuring elements reminiscent of Spanish castles, Italian villas, and oriental dragons. The interior was adorned with starlit skies and housed a Grande Barton Pipe Organ, enhancing the theatrical experience for its patrons. Throughout its history, the Coronado PAC has been graced by numerous show business legends, including the Marx Brothers, Tommy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, George Gershwin, Bob Hope, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Gypsy Rose Lee. These performances have cemented the venue's reputation as a premier location for entertainment in the Midwest. In addition to its role as a performance venue, the Coronado PAC has been a significant cultural hub for the Rockford community. It has served as the romantic backdrop for many first dates, a weekend destination for children's cartoons and movies until 1984, and a gathering place for events such as high school graduations, political rallies, and various community events. Recognizing the importance of preserving its historic charm and cultural significance, the Coronado PAC underwent an extensive restoration from 1999 to 2001. This $18.5 million project was supported by the city of Rockford, individuals, corporations, and spearheaded by the Friends of the Coronado, a non-profit organization established in 1997. The restoration aimed to modernize the facility while maintaining its original grandeur, resulting in a state-of-the-art performance and entertainment facility that reopened in January 2001. Today, the Coronado Performing Arts Center continues to invite audiences to experience a diverse array of events, from Broadway shows to concerts, comedy acts, family performances, and appearances by the Rockford Symphony Orchestra. The venue also hosts special events such as movie experiences and award ceremonies. With a commitment to accessibility and visitor experience, the Coronado PAC provides detailed information on policies, parking, directions, and nearby accommodations, ensuring guests have a memorable and enjoyable visit. The Coronado PAC is part of ASM Rockford, which also includes the BMO Center and Davis Park at Founder's Landing. It remains an iconic venue in Rockford, where history and entertainment come together, offering a unique and enchanting experience for all who pass through its doors.
