Mercury Theater Chicago is a prominent live theater venue located at 3745 North Southport Avenue in the heart of the Southport Corridor, a sophisticated neighborhood known for its restaurants and boutiques, and situated near the iconic Wrigley Field. This neighborhood playhouse, with a seating capacity of 280, is complemented by the adjoining Venus Cabaret Theater, which seats 80 patrons. The building that Mercury Theater Chicago calls home has a storied history, originally opening its doors in 1912 as a silent film nickelodeon called The Blaine Theatre. It was named in honor of James G. Blaine, an actor who also served as a Senator and Secretary of State. The Blaine Theatre saw success until the advent of talking pictures in 1928, which led to the obsolescence of silent film venues. Subsequently, the building was repurposed for various uses over the years. A significant transformation occurred in 1994 when theater producer Michael Cullen acquired the property and converted it into a live theater, aptly named the Mercury Theatre. The venue changed hands again in 2010 and was reestablished as Mercury Theater Chicago under the leadership of Walter Stearns, an experienced theater director and producer. Mercury Theater Chicago has since become an integral part of Chicago's dynamic theater scene. It is known for its record-setting long runs and has been a significant employer for hundreds of artists. The theater's contributions to the arts have not gone unnoticed, as it has received numerous award nominations over the years. The current team leading Mercury Theater Chicago includes Christopher Chase Carter as Artistic Director, Kristi Martens as Managing Director, and Walter Stearns and Eugene Dizon serving as Executive Producers. The venue's second performance space, Venus Cabaret Theater, provides a more intimate theatrical experience, further enhanced by the offering of specialty cocktails. Mercury Theater Chicago continues to be a cherished institution within the community, forming partnerships and engaging with local audiences through a diverse range of productions. Some of its notable presentations include "Young Frankenstein," "Jersey Boys," "The Great Gatsby Show," and tributes to renowned artists such as Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. The theater's commitment to providing high-quality entertainment and fostering artistic talent remains at the core of its mission.
