The Copernicus Center, located at 5216 W. Lawrence Avenue in Chicago, Illinois, is a historic venue with a rich history that spans several decades. Originally known as the Gateway Theater, the building was constructed in 1930 and functioned as a movie palace until 1985. Designed by architect Mason Rapp of Rapp & Rapp, the theater is renowned for its atmospheric-style architecture, a rare and distinguished design that makes it the only surviving theater of its kind in the Chicago area. Rapp & Rapp were famous for their deluxe theater designs, including other notable Chicago landmarks such as the Chicago, Oriental, and Palace Theatres, as well as numerous theaters across the United States. In 1985, the Copernicus Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the Polish American and other ethnic communities, took over the operations of the theater. It opened its doors to a variety of cultural and civic groups, providing them with a place to gather and celebrate their heritage. The theater underwent a name change in 1997, becoming the Mitchell P. Kobelinski Theater in honor of one of the Foundation's founders and its longest-serving President. This change marked a new era for the venue, which has since become a central hub for performing arts and community events. The late 1990s saw the theater in a state of disrepair due to financial difficulties faced by the Copernicus Foundation. However, through numerous fundraising efforts and a 10-year renovation program, the theater was restored to its former glory and even improved upon. The renovation included updates to the floors, ceiling, seats, and facades, as well as the restoration of dressing rooms and the addition of modern amenities to accommodate live concerts. The theater now features a large thrust stage, state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems, and is a popular destination for a variety of concert acts. The Copernicus Center's Annex, boasting a modern loft style with hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, skylights, and a natural wood-beamed ceiling, is connected to the theater's expanded lobby. The Annex serves as a secondary venue for smaller performances and private events. The theater is a vibrant part of the community, hosting concerts, theatrical productions, dance showcases, comedy shows, and an array of ethnic events, graduations, and community programming every weekend. The Copernicus Center also hosts the annual Taste of Polonia Festival, the Polonia Cup Golf Outing, and other significant cultural events. The Copernicus Foundation continues to support cultural, community, and performing arts events through donations and membership. It encourages the public to contribute to its cause, ensuring that the Copernicus Center remains a beacon for arts and culture in Chicago.
