Atlantic Classical Orchestra

Vero Beach, FL, United States

The Atlantic Classical Orchestra (ACO) is a distinguished cultural institution that has been enriching Florida’s Treasure Coast with classical music for over three decades. Founded by Andrew "Andy" McMullan, the orchestra was born from his passion for classical music and his aspiration to establish a professional orchestra in the region. Today, the ACO stands as a testament to McMullan's vision, having evolved into a cultural jewel that is cherished by the community. The ACO's inception can be traced back to a serendipitous encounter between Andrew McMullan and Jean Gentry, a cellist, at the University of Connecticut, where McMullan was serving as the Director of Bands. Their partnership, both personal and professional, flourished over the years. McMullan, a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, had a multifaceted career in music, performing on the French horn and conducting various ensembles, while also succeeding in the business world. Jean Gentry, alongside her musical pursuits, achieved her dream of owning and directing the international Alford Lake Camp in Hope, Maine. The couple's dedication to music and the community led to the formation of the Atlantic Classical Orchestra. Initially operating from their dining room table and later from the condo of Raz and Gordon Allen, the ACO started to take shape. The Allens played a crucial role in securing grants and funding for the orchestra, and the ACO Board, along with the Stuart Friends and Vero Beach Friends, contributed significantly to fundraising efforts. Recruiting some of the finest professional musicians, McMullan ensured that the ACO's performances would reflect the high caliber of the orchestra. The ACO's rehearsals took place in various venues, including schools and churches, and the musicians were enthusiastic about performing the selected repertoire. Performances were initially held at The First Baptist Church in Vero Beach and later at the Waxlax Center for the Performing Arts, with a consistent presence at the Lyric Theatre in Stuart. In January 2019, the ACO community mourned the loss of its visionary founder, Andy McMullan. His legacy, however, endures through the orchestra's ongoing commitment to delivering exceptional musical experiences. The ACO continues to captivate audiences with performances of classical masterpieces and works by emerging artists, fulfilling McMullan's dream of providing a platform for professional musicians to share their talents. The Atlantic Classical Orchestra, headquartered at 2145 14th Avenue, Suite 20B in Vero Beach, FL, remains a beacon of classical music on the Treasure Coast. The orchestra's programming includes the Masterworks Series, Chamber Concerts, and various special events, ensuring that the beauty of classical music continues to resonate throughout the community. With a dedicated staff, a committed Board of Directors, and the support of its patrons and volunteers, the ACO honors the spirit of its founders by fostering a love for classical music and enriching the cultural landscape of Florida.
