In celebration of Juneteenth and in collaboration with the Juneteenth Festival coordinated by B Marshall. Due to the construction in anticipation of the 2026 NFL Draft, the venue has changed from downtown to the east end of Pittsburgh in Mellon Park near Bakery Square. The stage for this concert has also changed and is very small – with max instrumentation around 21 players.  Because of these conditions, we have decided to program this concert as a big band program featuring the brass members from the PSO with additional sax players from the region. The evening will commence with a pre-concert talk at 7 PM, offering insights and enriching the concert experience. The program features the premiere of Katherine Balch’s "musica pyralis," a co-commission in partnership with the New York Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Santa Rosa Symphony, and the Erie Symphony, supported by New Music USA’s Amplifying Voices program. This piece is set to captivate the audience with its innovative composition and execution.

The highlight of the night will be Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, with its famous Adagietto, a love song to Mahler’s wife, Alma. This symphony is a journey through triumph and despair, showcasing Mahler’s shift to pure instrumental music and the contrapuntal intensity reminiscent of J.S. Bach.

The symphony is transformed into a storybook on this literary program. Made famous by Disney’s Fantasia, Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice tells the tale of an apprentice discovering his master’s magic (as told by the trumpets) to bring a broom (as told by the bassoon) to life.

Disrupt: Postcards from Paris

On this program, experience how jazz intercepts with classical alongside two revolutionaries to the American musical landscape. An American enters an exciting yet unfamiliar European scene, as Gershwin leaves the listener smelling buttery croissants and seeing the twinkling of the Eiffel Tower. Additionally, violinist Nicola Benedetti showcases Wynton Marsalis’ concerto that won her a GRAMMY® in this classical ode to jazz.

Schooltime: Meet the Orchestra

Bonnie Raitt is a singer, songwriter and guitarist whose unique style blends blues, R&B, rock, and pop. After 20 years as a cult favorite, she broke through to the top in the early 90s with her GRAMMY-award winning albums, 'Nick of Time' and 'Luck of the Draw,' which featured hits, "Something To Talk About" and "I Can't Make You Love Me" among others. The ten-time Grammy winner was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and Rolling Stone named the slide guitar ace one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and one of the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time.”

You ready to RACH? Experience one of the biggest works in classical music as Leif Ove Andsnes performs Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto. 

Music Director Manfred Honeck returns to conduct a work ascending from the depths of hell to the heights of heaven. Liszt’s depiction of Dante’s Divine Comedy will lead the listener through the complexity of Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso in this Pittsburgh premiere.

Come and celebrate the talented musicians of the 2024 PSO Student Side-by-Side program!

The PSO Student Side-by-Side program gives musicians in grades 9-12 the experience of rehearsing and performing alongside their Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra counterparts. Selected through a competitive application process, this year's talented high school students will receive personal coaching from PSO musicians, participate in full orchestra rehearsals, collaborate with other student musicians and perform at a ticketed concert on the Heinz Hall stage.

Often used to depict hauntings and Halloween, Bach’s famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor opens the program, followed by Saint-Saëns’ glorified travelogue in his “Egyptian” piano concerto. Hear sounds of the Nile and other nods to the Middle East, played by the glamorously virtuosic Jean-Yves Thibaudet.

Experience the violinist that “sits atop the pantheon of stellar violinists” (NUVO), as Hilary Hahn brings the spice of Ginastera's Violin Concerto and Sarsate’s Carmen Fantasy to life. Feel the melodies that emanate sultriness in this adaptation of Bizet’s famous opera.

Written in the gray area of hoping for peace while also yearning for patriotic reform, Dvořák expressed this inner struggle in his epic symphony.

Everyone wants to book him right now: Alexandre Kantorow, the pianist born in 1997 who, seven years ago, became the first French winner of the Gold Medal at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition and received the prestigious Gilmore Artist Award in 2023. He has already performed with such world-class orchestras as the Berlin and New York Philharmonics and played Ravel’s Jeux d’eau in pouring rain at the opening of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games — an artist who captivates audiences with the poetry of his interpretations. For his Lucerne Festival debut, Kantorow turns to one of his favorite composers: Johannes Brahms, whose First Piano Concerto seems almost written for eleven or twelve fingers, so formidable are its challenges. But Kantorow fears neither the massive chords nor the filigree passagework. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Manfred Honeck then present a milestone of the Russian repertoire: Dmitri Shostakovich’s multilayered Fifth Symphony. With this work, written after being publicly denounced by Stalin’s “cultural guardians,” Shostakovich attempted to step out of the line of fire and wrote a bombastic, triumphal finale. But the real message can be heard between the lines.
