The Alhambra Orchestra of Miami is a distinguished community orchestra that has been a cornerstone of the Miami-Dade County's musical landscape since its inception in 1990. Founded by Dr. Leo Walz, the orchestra was created to fill the void of a community orchestra in the area. It began with performances in local churches, schools, and libraries, and after five years, it was incorporated as Alhambra Music, Inc., achieving 501(c)(3) status, which marked the beginning of its significant growth. ===History=== The orchestra's name originates from its original home in a church located on Alhambra Street in Coral Gables, which has since been demolished. Since 2000, the orchestra has been governed by an elected board, primarily composed of member musicians. Over its 30-plus years, the Alhambra Orchestra has seen a steady expansion in its budget and audience reach, transitioning into a full-sized symphony capable of performing major classical works. Despite its growth, the orchestra has preserved its independent and self-governing character, with a volunteer board and mostly volunteer musicians. ===Mission and Vision=== The Alhambra Orchestra's mission is to serve and inspire individuals, families, and communities through unsurpassed and accessible musical experiences. The organization strives to be an inclusive and culturally relevant community orchestra, allowing all people to experience the world through historic and impactful music. The orchestra is committed to the idea that music is a lifelong pursuit for both performers and listeners, enriching the community and enhancing humanity. ===Programming and Community Engagement=== The orchestra is known for its multifaceted approach to music, including chamber performances, children's programs, summer events, pops concerts, and full symphony performances. It aims to educate, engage, and empower the community, fostering a lifelong appreciation of music. Annually, the Alhambra Orchestra presents 10-12 public performances, most of which are free to the public. It also provides free school visits, maintains a prestigious concerto competition for youth, and runs an annual chamber music workshop. ===Artistic Leadership=== The current artistic director and conductor is Dr. Daniel Andai, a prominent figure in the music community, serving as the Dean of Music at the New World School of the Arts and concertmaster of the Miami Symphony Orchestra. Under his leadership, the orchestra has continued to flourish, offering a full season of high-quality performances. ===Collaborations and Outreach=== The orchestra has a history of partnerships with schools and community organizations, reaching over 4,000 concertgoers each season. Collaborators include the Civic Chorale of Greater Miami, Miami Acting Company, Greater Miami Youth Symphony, and many others. The Alhambra Orchestra remains dedicated to bringing great music to the community in creative and financially sustainable ways. ===Educational Initiatives=== In addition to performance, the Alhambra Orchestra places a strong emphasis on educational outreach. The annual chamber music workshop and the Ray Millette Annual Young Artist Concerto Competition are two of its flagship initiatives, fostering the development of young musicians and providing them with opportunities to perform and compete at high levels. ===Board of Directors and Administrative Staff=== The orchestra is overseen by a board of directors and administrative staff, consisting of businesspeople, students, and professionals who are also member musicians. This team is responsible for the day-to-day operations and strategic direction of the organization. The Alhambra Orchestra of Miami remains a vital part of the cultural fabric of South Florida, dedicated to its mission of making music accessible and meaningful to the community it serves. With a history of artistic excellence and a commitment to the people of Miami, the orchestra continues to be a beacon of musical aspiration and collaboration.
