Two young superstars lead the way when the Orchestre de Paris makes a return to Celebrity Series for the first time since 1993/94 with three important pieces that all premiered in the City of Light.

This program of Stravinsky ballets features the Carnegie Hall debut of a rising-star conductor: Klaus Mäkelä, recently named the next music director of Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. The Firebird is a colorful showpiece that catapulted Stravinsky to international fame, and Mäkelä’s reading of it has been praised as “organic … each scene flowing seamlessly into the next” (Chicago Classical Review). The Rite of Spring is a revolutionary work, a true milestone that continues to seize and thrill audiences more than a century after its famously riotous Parisian debut.

At 27, the young Finnish conductor Klaus Mäkelä already has an impressive resume: chief conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic, music director of the Orchestre de Paris, and artistic partner of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, a role that will turn into chief conductor when his other music directorships expire in 2027.
