Shakespeare in Detroit

Detroit, MI, United States

Shakespeare in Detroit (SiD) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization renowned for introducing the first Shakespeare in the park experience to Detroit proper in 2013 with a production of "Othello" at Grand Circus Park. Since its inception, SiD has been dedicated to producing professional and groundbreaking renditions of William Shakespeare's plays. The organization has made a conscious effort to perform at a variety of venues across the city, ranging from traditional theaters to unconventional spaces. This approach not only provides accessibility to both seasoned and new theatergoers but also showcases the rich historical architecture and parks of Detroit. The mission of Shakespeare in Detroit is multifaceted, aiming to enhance the cultural, educational, and financial landscape of Detroit. The organization places a strong emphasis on principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion in all its theatrical endeavors. SiD's vision is to balance the production of classic plays, musicals, contemporary works, and new creations each season, solidifying its role as the city's official Shakespeare company. The company's aspiration is to become a cultural magnet for tourists worldwide, offering a range of performances including staged readings, theatrical productions, and special events. In addition to its theatrical productions, Shakespeare in Detroit is committed to educational outreach. The company designs educational programs that align with and enrich the curricula of K-12 students throughout Southeast Michigan, with a particular focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) initiatives. Shakespeare in Detroit's annual schedule includes a main stage series featuring current season events, as well as special events that occur outside the traditional performance season. These offerings contribute to the vibrant cultural tapestry of Detroit and support the organization's goal of making classical theatre more accessible and relevant to the community. The organization relies on the support of donors to sustain its activities and has a dedicated "Donate" section on its website, encouraging patrons to contribute to the continuation and expansion of its work. As Shakespeare in Detroit celebrates over a decade of theatrical excellence, it continues to invite the public to get involved and support its mission to be a dynamic cultural force in Detroit.
