### Oakland Youth Orchestras (OYO) #### Overview The Oakland Youth Orchestras (OYO) is a distinguished four-tiered orchestra program that has been nurturing the musical talents of young individuals from 2nd grade through high school since its inception in 1975. Based in southeast Michigan, OYO attracts students from nearly 30 school districts and over 100 schools, with an enrollment of approximately 350 students who seek to challenge themselves beyond their school music programs. OYO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that values its partnership with Oakland University's School of Music, Theater and Dance, as well as local school music programs and private teachers, all of whom contribute to the development of OYO's student musicians. #### Mission Statement The mission of OYO is to inspire young people, through the power of music, to become outstanding musicians, individuals, and leaders. #### Educational Philosophy OYO's primary educational goal is to develop students' comprehensive musicianship, which includes aesthetic awareness, music criticism, and music history skills. The organization emphasizes the teaching of performance skills necessary for quality musical performances and provides a wide variety of literature for extensive musical experiences. OYO offers an inclusive environment that encourages musicians to make decisions and solve artistic problems both individually and collectively. The organization promotes team building, commitment, and enthusiasm, utilizing an interactive instructional model that fosters learning inside and outside the rehearsal setting. While auditions are required for entry, OYO de-emphasizes overt competition, focusing instead on the realization of established musical criteria for each orchestra tier. #### Community Involvement OYO is a community-centric organization that brings together students with a shared passion for music, fostering friendships and laughter. Parents engage in OYO's volunteer and fundraising activities, witnessing their children's growth and excellence. The conductors are professional musicians and experienced educators who impart the lifelong gift of music-making. Board members contribute their expertise to ensure OYO adheres to sound policies, while donors provide essential support that allows OYO to advance music education and maintain the strength of its programs. #### History Founded in 1975 as Oakland Youth Symphony, Inc., OYO was established by Joan G. Berndt of Oakland University's Music Department and Dr. Raynoki Alvin, the Department Chairman. The orchestra began with 50 students and Ervin Monroe, the principal flutist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, as the founding conductor. Over the years, OYO has seen significant growth and milestones: - In the 1990s, OYO expanded its offerings with the creation of additional orchestra groups and the hiring of passionate conductors like Anthony Krempa and Zeljko Milicevic, a former OYO student. - The turn of the millennium saw further expansion with the Philharmonia Orchestra and the addition of community outreach programs. - OYO celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2014-2015 with a commissioned piece by Catherine McMichael, titled "Symphony of the Ages." - In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, OYO adapted by creating Virtual OYO, ensuring continuous musical education through virtual rehearsals and concerts. - As of the 2023-2024 season, OYO celebrates its 49th year, continuing to provide enriching experiences for young musicians, including the return of community outreach recitals and the appointment of a new Executive Director, Genevieve Pamel. OYO has been a beacon of musical excellence and education in the community for nearly five decades, consistently adapting to the needs of its members and the community while upholding its mission to inspire and develop young musicians.
