Stage Coach Theatre (SCT) is a non-profit community theater organization based in Boise, Idaho, dedicated to producing live theatre that reflects and celebrates the human spirit. The theatre is committed to making performances accessible to the community and engages volunteers from the local area in all aspects of production. SCT is recognized for its diverse range of live plays, including comedies, dramas, and musicals, and produces eight productions per season. Founded in 1981 as a 501(c)(3) corporation, Stage Coach Theatre began with the mission of providing quality theatre at a low cost, bringing live theatre to underserved communities, and utilizing local talent. The original Board of Directors consisted of five founding members, and the theatre's first season featured five productions performed in the basement of the Basque Center in downtown Boise. With an initial annual operating budget of just over $5,000, ticket prices were set at $3.50. Originally named The Stagecoach Inc., the theatre's name was eventually split into Stage Coach to better reflect its focus on stage work rather than traveling productions, as well as to differentiate it from a local restaurant with a similar name. Over the years, the theatre has occupied several locations, including a former fire station and a space in the Hillcrest Shopping Center. In 2010, SCT was notified that it had to vacate its long-term location in the Hillcrest Shopping Center. A horde of volunteers helped move the theater's possessions, and after a period of performing in temporary locations, a new permanent facility was acquired at the site of the old Dino's Bar and Grill on Emerald Street. The theatre successfully raised funds for the down payment and build-out costs, and after extensive renovations by volunteers, SCT officially opened its doors for the 32nd season in August 2012. The original five-member Board of Directors has evolved over time, with the current board elected annually by the membership. The move to the new facility saw an increase in operating costs, with the annual budget growing to approximately $48,000. Despite financial challenges, SCT has continued to thrive, with creativity and resourcefulness being hallmarks of its productions. Stage Coach Theatre is distinguished by its commitment to community involvement, with opportunities for local actors, writers, and volunteers to contribute to the theatre's success. The spelling of "Theatre" in its name is intentionally the English variant, to distinguish between live stage performances and movie theaters. The history of Stage Coach Theatre is a testament to the dedication and passion of its volunteers and supporters, and as its history transitions from oral to digital records, SCT continues to document and share its journey with the community. Memorabilia and historical artifacts, such as posters from early seasons, are cherished parts of the theatre's legacy.
