New Orleans Civic Symphony

New Orleans, LA, United States

==New Orleans Civic Symphony== The '''New Orleans Civic Symphony''' (NOCS) is a community orchestra that has been a stalwart provider of live orchestral music to the Greater New Orleans Area. This ensemble is characterized by its dedication to offering a wide array of classical music performances to the public free of charge. The NOCS prides itself on being an inclusive group that welcomes volunteer musicians of all ages and backgrounds, united by their shared passion for music. ===History=== The NOCS was founded in the 1940s and has since become a cherished institution for both musicians and audiences alike. Initially, the orchestra was part of the New Orleans Recreation Department (NORD) during the 1950s, 60s, and early 70s. In a significant move towards autonomy and growth, the orchestra separated from NORD in 1974, establishing itself as a tax-exempt organization. This transition enabled the NOCS to accept donations and expand its activities, further entrenching its role in the cultural landscape of New Orleans. The governance of the NOCS is maintained through annual elections, where positions such as President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, and several Board Member roles are filled, ensuring a democratic and community-led approach to its management. ===Goals=== The NOCS is driven by three primary goals that guide its operations and performances. The first goal is to provide exceptional live classical music to audiences without any admission fees, ensuring accessibility for all. The second goal is to create a nurturing environment for emerging talents and seasoned musicians who may be students or professionals in other fields, allowing them to engage in the orchestral experience. Lastly, the NOCS aspires to be the premier volunteer orchestra in the region, presenting a repertoire that includes both timeless masterpieces and innovative, contemporary works. In a notable collaboration, the NOCS partners with the Musical Arts Society of New Orleans to feature the annual winner of the New Orleans Piano Institute’s Concerto Competition and Keyboard Festival in concert. This initiative has showcased prominent local musicians such as Harry Connick, Jr., and Wynton Marsalis, among others, further cementing the orchestra's commitment to supporting and celebrating local talent. The New Orleans Civic Symphony continues to be a vital part of the city's musical heritage, bringing together musicians and music lovers in the shared experience of orchestral performance.
