Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestras

New Orleans, LA, United States

The Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestras (GNOYO) is a prominent non-profit arts organization that has been providing high-quality orchestral experiences to school-age musicians in New Orleans since its inception in 1994. Established by a coalition of parents, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra musicians, and local music teachers, GNOYO began with two main ensembles: the Sinfonia, an intermediate level string orchestra, and the Philharmonia, a full orchestra for more advanced students. GNOYO's inaugural performances took place in May 1995 under the baton of Carrie Telthorst at the University of New Orleans Performing Arts Center. The organization quickly expanded, and by the fall of 1995, it had become the official youth orchestra of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. That season, GNOYO accepted 75 students and hosted a joint concert with the Midwest Young Artists Senior Orchestra from Chicago. On February 26, 1996, GNOYO was legally incorporated as an independent non-profit organization in the State of Louisiana, achieving tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. It also formed its first board of directors, with John Fairlie serving as the first Executive Director. The organization's growth continued, reaching 100 participants in the 1996 season and attracting students from across the region. GNOYO's collaborations have been a significant part of its history, including side-by-side performances with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and a partnership with the New Orleans Ballet for a production of "Peter & the Wolf" in March 1998. In 1999, GNOYO expanded its reach to the Northshore with the establishment of the Northshore Sinfonia, and further enhanced its program offerings with the addition of the GNOYO Symphony, an advanced full orchestra, and a chamber music program. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, GNOYO played a vital role in the community's recovery by resuming its activities in October, providing a stable and creative outlet for young musicians. In recognition of its importance post-Katrina, GNOYO received the 2006 Governor’s Arts Award in the Arts Organization/Education Category and was one of the recipients of the 2006 Coming Up Taller Awards by the President’s Committee for the Arts and Humanities. Under the leadership of Music Director Dr. Jean Montès, GNOYO has continued to flourish, adding programs such as the Young Artist Academy and enhancing chamber music opportunities. The Symphony, directed by Dr. Montès, performed at New York's Carnegie Hall in 2009 and collaborated with world-famous violinist Midori in 2010. That same year, GNOYO responded to the Haiti earthquake by raising funds and collecting instruments for young musicians affected by the disaster. GNOYO's international presence was established in 2011 when Dr. Montès led the GNOYO Symphony on a five-concert tour of France, including a performance at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. In 2012, the entire GNOYO orchestra participated in a residency with Grammy Award-winning musician Mark O’Connor at Loyola University. Celebrating its 20th season in 2014, GNOYO has marked a significant milestone in providing exceptional music education in New Orleans. The organization continues to nurture and inspire young musicians, contributing to the cultural richness of the region and fostering the next generation of musical talent.
