The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra (A2SO) is a cornerstone of the cultural landscape in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with a rich history that dates back over 90 years. Established in 1928 by a quintet of music enthusiasts from the local Methodist Church, the A2SO has evolved from a community orchestra to the largest arts employer in Washtenaw County. Over the decades, the orchestra has been under the leadership of various distinguished music directors, including Carl St.Clair, Sam Wong, Arie Lipsky, and most recently, Earl Lee. The A2SO was initially formed by four musicians at the local Methodist Church, with Philip Potts serving as their manager. The following year, Warren Ketcham, a student at the University of Michigan School of Music, took over as the first director. By 1930, the ensemble had grown to 12 members and was known as the Ann Arbor Community Orchestra. The orchestra saw steady growth and increased community involvement, performing at various events and concerts throughout the years. In 1986, a significant milestone was reached when the A2SO transitioned to a fully professional orchestra. This change marked a new era of artistic excellence and community engagement. The orchestra has since been committed to presenting high-quality musical performances, with a repertoire that includes both core classical works and new compositions, thereby fulfilling its artistic policy. The A2SO's mission is to enrich the region's culture and foster an appreciation for orchestral music and regional musicians through imaginative programming and community involvement. Its vision is to cultivate a love for music in individuals of all ages, which it achieves through excellent performances and educational initiatives. Throughout its history, the A2SO has been involved in various educational and community outreach programs. It has collaborated with local schools, such as the Ann Arbor Pioneer High School, whose A Cappella Choir has performed at prestigious events and worked alongside the orchestra. The A2SO is governed by a Board of Directors and managed by a dedicated staff, with Earl Lee serving as the current Music Director. The orchestra's commitment to the community is also reflected in its support initiatives, such as the Podium Promise and various fundraising efforts that ensure the continuation of its mission. The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra's home is located at 35 Research Drive, Ste 100, Ann Arbor, MI 48103. It continues to engage audiences with a diverse range of concerts and events, fostering a deep appreciation for the transformative power of music.
