The Johnson City Symphony Orchestra (JCSO) is a distinguished musical ensemble with a rich history that spans over five decades. Established in 1969, the JCSO was founded by patrons of the arts who recognized the potential of Johnson City's growing population and the abundance of local talent, thanks to the presence of two colleges and a university in the area. The founders believed that the community deserved the opportunity to experience live orchestral performances. From its modest beginnings with 28 original members, the JCSO has expanded to a full orchestra comprising 70 musicians. Over the years, the orchestra has been under the leadership of nine conductors, beginning with Mr. Gil Oxendine from 1969 to 1974, followed by co-directors Dr. Lewis Songer and Mr. Richard Compton in 1974. Subsequent conductors included Dr. James Marable (1974-1982), Mr. Thomas Hinds (1982-1983), Ms. Antonia Joy Wilson (1983-1989), Mr. Lewis Dalvit (1989-2004), and Mr. Thomas Stites (2006-2008). Since 2008, the JCSO has been under the baton of Rob Seebacher, who continues to lead the orchestra with passion and dedication. Throughout its history, the JCSO has been committed to delivering outstanding performances that feature both regional and international guest artists. The orchestra has hosted renowned artists such as Bela Fleck, Valentina Lisitsa, Chee-Yun, Bella Hristova, The Canadian Brass, and the Celtic ensemble Mithril. Additionally, the JCSO has collaborated with other artists to present classic works, including a full symphony and ballet performance of Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker." The JCSO's mission extends beyond performance to include educational outreach, introducing local schoolchildren to the joys of music. This commitment to community engagement is a testament to the founders' vision of a symphony orchestra as a cultural asset that contributes to the region's attractiveness for new businesses and residents. The 2019-2020 concert season marked the 50th anniversary of the JCSO, a milestone celebrated with a series of fabulous concerts that continued the orchestra's tradition of musical excellence. As described by Rob Seebacher, the experience of attending a JCSO concert is one of unity and kinship, where musicians and audience members alike participate in the creation and enjoyment of music. The JCSO's journey from a community project to a beacon of artistic excellence is a story of unwavering commitment and evolution. As principal bass trombonist Spenser Weese, a ten-year veteran of the orchestra, noted, performances such as Holst's "The Planets" exemplify the JCSO's growth and the profound sense of accomplishment felt by its members. The Johnson City Symphony Orchestra remains a cherished institution in the Tri-Cities area, dedicated to bringing world-class music to the community and fostering a love of the arts for generations to come.
