Newark Symphony Orchestra

Newark, DE, United States

The Newark Symphony Orchestra (NSO) is a community orchestra based in Newark, Delaware, with a rich history dating back to its founding in 1966. As a cultural institution, the NSO has been bringing classical music to the community for over half a century, featuring approximately 80 performing musicians from diverse backgrounds who share a passion for classical music. Throughout its history, the NSO has been committed to presenting a wide array of musical performances. The orchestra's season typically includes at least eight concerts, divided into various series. The Symphony Series comprises four concerts that offer a mix of well-known classical pieces alongside other exciting orchestral works. In addition to this, the Chamber Series features three concerts that showcase the talents of the Newark Symphony Chamber Orchestra, the Newark Symphony Chorus, and various small ensembles. The NSO also delights audiences with Family Concerts and performs at special events in different venues, such as their notable 2008 concert performance of "Aïda" at Cecil College and the 2011 encore performance of their May program at Appoquinimink High School in Middletown, Delaware. The NSO's reputation for excellence was established under the baton of its first music director, Harley Hastings, who served until 1982. Following Hastings, from 1982 to 2009, the orchestra was directed by professional conductor Roman Pawlowski, who elevated the orchestra's performances to levels not typically seen in volunteer ensembles. Since 2010, Music Director Simeone Tartaglione has been at the helm, continuing to guide the orchestra into the future with his leadership. Education and outreach have been integral to the NSO's mission, particularly in northern Delaware. For over four decades, the orchestra has hosted annual youth concerto competitions, providing opportunities for young musicians in both college and high-school-age divisions to perform with the orchestra during a spring concert. As a non-profit organization, the Newark Symphony Orchestra relies heavily on the support of local residents, Delaware arts foundations, corporations, and other sponsors. The Friends of the Newark Symphony Orchestra plays a vital role in providing additional volunteer and fundraising support to sustain the orchestra's endeavors. The governance of the NSO is overseen by a Board of Directors, which includes local citizens, business leaders, arts advocates, and orchestra musicians, ensuring that the organization remains connected to the community it serves. The NSO's commitment to the arts is evident not only in its performances but also in its adaptive response to challenges, such as the cancellation of a rehearsal on January 16th, 2024, due to inclement weather, showcasing the organization's dedication to the safety and well-being of its musicians and patrons.
