The University Singers are a select ensemble of treble voices at the University of Delaware, chosen by competitive audition at the beginning of each year, and comprised of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors from over 30 majors across the University.

The UD Symphonic Band, led by Brooke Johnson and James Ancona ,is a group of 60-70 wind and percussion instrumentalists. Membership is open to all students from all majors at the University. The Symphonic Band performs standard concert band literature as well as transcriptions and music originally written for wind band.

The University of Delaware Graduate Percussion Group is composed of members Jacob Fullinwider, Nathan Jackman, Kyle Skinner, and Carl Tafoya. The goal of the Graduate Percussion Group is to perform works from the classical, contemporary, and world percussion genres to give any audience something they are bound to enjoy as well as experience something new. This program is no different, including pieces that incorporate standard and non-standard instrumentation, exploring the many sounds that are unique to our percussion repertoire.

This concert is a vibrant exploration of orchestral repertoire, illuminating music's capacity to both mirror cultural identity and to serve as a source of inspiration.

 

For this performance, we are thrilled to welcome UD faculty member Christine Delbeau (https://www.music.udel.edu/who-we-are/delbeau) to the stage. Italy’s Il Messagero’s enthusiastic review described her playing as, “… particularly compelling to follow the development of the music as guided by this great American soloist, so in tune with the music she so intimately interprets.” Delbeau has performed as collaborative pianist and soloist in several of the world’s most prominent venues, including the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Carnegie Hall and Weill-Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City, Boston’s Jordan Hall, and Philadelphia’s Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center. Internationally, she has performed at the Tonhalle in Zurich, Switzerland, and in concerts at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, France.

The UD Wind Ensemble has partnered with the UD Department of Art & Design to curate an art exhibition showcasing works by fine arts students to be displayed at the event. This unique partnership was inspired by the performance of Picture Studies, Adam Schoenberg's modern take on Modest Mussorgsky’s famous “Pictures at an Exhibition.”

University of Delaware’s faculty experts will discuss the research and careers of the 2024 Nobel Prize winners at this year’s Nobel Symposium, Wednesday, Nov. 13 in the Harker ISE Laboratory Atrium. 

 

Hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences, this annual talk gives an opportunity to learn more about the prizes and their winners from faculty who conduct research in fields similar to the new laureates.

Violist Jacob Burk invites you to an extraordinary recital exploring the depth and brilliance of the viola repertoire. The program will feature Paul Hindemith's Concerto "Der Schwanendreher", a cornerstone of 20th-century viola music, and the virtuosic Viola Sonata by Henri Vieuxtemps. Adding a touch of Baroque elegance, selections from Bach's Cello Suite No. 6 will highlight the instrument's lyrical beauty. The recital will also feature the world premiere of a viola arrangement of SEVEN by Grammy-nominated composer Andrea Casarrubios, offering a powerful contemporary voice to this diverse program. Šarūnas Jankauskas, clarinet guest artist, and Mark Livshits, piano, present a program of compositions by Handel, Blardony, Ran, Jankauskas, Villani-Côrtes, and Sargon.

 

Clarinetist Šarūnas Jankauskas enjoys a rewarding performance and teaching career. He serves on the faculty at James Madison University, where he was a 2023 recipient of the campus-wide Madison Vision Teaching Award, a recognition that is solely decided by the students.

Praised by the Chicago Tribune for his “ incredible performance” violist Elias Goldstein has distinguished himself as one of the great instrumentalists of his generation. Prize winner in the leading viola competitions of the world, including the 2011 International Primrose Competition, the 2010 Lionel Tertis Competition, he is also the first American to be awarded a top prize in the the Bashmet International Competition in Moscow. He has achieved recognition a​​nd critical acclaim as a champion of his instrument, as the first violist invited to Carnegie Hall to perform all 24 Caprices by Paganini, a program that later toured the United States and Europe.

The 1925 Phantom of the Opera is a silent film that captivated audiences with its gothic atmosphere, dramatic storytelling, and Lon Chaney’s iconic performance as the Phantom.

Christiana Winds presents their fall concert comprised of 19th and 20th century classics from the wind quintet repertoire. Selections will enthrall the audience with a variety of atmospheres such as exuberant, reflective, and humorous. The program includes: Trois pièces brèves by Jacques Ibert; Pastorale by Amy Beach; Wind Quintet by August Klughardt; and Three Shanties by Malcolm Arnold.

 

An ensemble of five dynamic and brilliant players, Christiana Winds explores the exciting and unique tradition of wind chamber music from the 18th century to the present. In diverse settings from the concert hall to the school classroom, Christiana Winds brings to its audiences the freshness and immediacy of the wind-instrument tradition. As ensemble-in-residence in the University of Delaware School of Music, Christiana Winds performs a variety of music, often with guest artists, and has been active commissioning new works for wind quintet.

This concert features jazz standards - Secret Love arranged by Ray Brown, Beatrice arranged by Dave Bozenhard and Dizzy's Business arranged by Steve Brown. Original compositions by Todd Groves (woodwinds) and Nick Pietuszka (trumpet) Todd's "First State Blues" was recorded by the Faculty Jazz and will be on the CD due out later this year.

 

​Comprised of University of Delaware faculty members who are in demand as jazz performers in and around the Delaware Valley, the UD Faculty Jazz Ensemble is dedicated to the performance and education of America's classical music. The ensemble performs on campus as part of the School of Music’s concert series and is available for clinics and performances in schools and concert venues. This event is part of the residency by Santiago Beis, composer and member of Onishi-Beis Duo, an electroacoustic improvisation duo of which Yoshiaki Onishi, Assistant Professor of Music Composition takes part. In this all-improvisation concert, Onishi-Beis Duo collaborates with Miles Brown, Assistant Professor of String Bass and Jazz.

Kenneth Thompkins, Associate Professor of Trombone at Michigan State University and Principal Trombonist of the Detroit Symphony will perform a trombone recital. Thompkins will perform music by African American composers William Grant Still, Kevin Day, and Brian Nabors as well as works by Alec Wilder and Ida Gotkovsky. Julie Nishimura, retired collaborative pianist of the University of Delaware School of Music, returns to perform alongside Mr. Thompkins on this program.

The Sassafras Brass Quintet is the premier brass quintet at The University of Delaware. Made up of all performance graduate students, the group seeks to perform a diverse range of music from classical Renaissance music to modern popular music. The Brass Quintet also prides itself on its ability to adapt while maintaining the highest level of performance.

The Symphonic Band (James Ancona, conductor) will feature the works of Samuel Hazo, Wataru Hokoyama, George Walker, Cait Nishimura, Gordon Jacob and Malcolm Arnold. Repertoire will include Lonely Beach (Normandy, 1944), the epic tone poem by James Barnes.

The Innocents is social justice advocacy through performance art. The work is an effort to delve deeply into the most current issues surrounding the core subject of wrongful imprisonment and exoneration, as well as a commitment to connect with the communities in which it is performed. We have embraced our role as advocates through the realization that our work cuts to the emotional core of the human experience surrounding these issues.

Vocal Point Presents: Acappellooza 2024!

Join the UD Wind Ensemble for a musical exploration of the complexities of the American experience. The ensemble will be joined by guest artist Jarrod Lee, who will perform Armando Bayolo's work "Last Breaths," which sets the final words of six young black men killed by police. UD student poet-collaborators from the Department of English will share their reflections in both printed form and through live poetry readings. Other works include Carolyn Bremer's "Early Light," Steve Danyew's "Into the Silent Land," Benjamin Horne's gorgeous setting of "Deep River," and Donald Grantham's masterwork "Southern Harmony."

The Easterlies Woodwind Quintet, Graduate Ensemble-in-Residence

Praised for his warm, polished tone and his ability to infuse his characters with deep authenticity, baritone, Brian Carter, has delighted audiences on operatic stages throughout the United States. Memorable performances include the Figaro in Opera Delaware’s Il barbire di Siviglia; the title roles in Verdi’s Rigoletto and Macbeth at Sarasota Opera and Opera in the Heights, respectively; Ping in Turandot at Opera North; Sam in Trouble in Tahiti with Greensboro Opera; George in Of Mice and Men and Tonio in Pagliacci with Opera San José. Brian has also performed extensively on the concert stage as a soloist for oratorios including Messiah (Handel), Elijah (Mendelssohn), The Creation (Haydn), Magnificat (J.S. Bach), and Symphony No. 9 (Beethoven); as well as a recitalist, having sung programs which included Dichterliebe (Schumann), Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and Des Knaben Wunderhorn (Mahler), L’horizon chimérique (Fauré), Banalités (Poulenc), and Songs of Travel (Vaughan Williams). Dr. Carter has also taken an interest in stage direction both musical theater and opera. He has directed a productions of Andrea Chenier for Concert Opera of Philadelphia, The Drowsy Chaperone for Avon Grove Community Theater, and Fiddler on the Roof for The Brandywiners, Ltd. A graduate of San José State University and The University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Carter currently teaches applied voice on the faculty at University of Delaware School of Music and at the University of Pennsylvania.

We proudly present a colorful program featuring Ravel's orchestral transcriptions of iconic piano pieces from a variety of composers, honoring the memory of beloved friends. By reimagining intimate solo works for the expansive orchestral palette, Ravel transformed these compositions into dazzling sonic landscapes, offering a unique opportunity to explore the rich and varied world of Impressionist music.

The two University of Delaware Jazz Ensembles will be perfoming a variety of arrangements. Each band will feature two new arrangements of "video game music" arranged by Mike Tomaro. Other arrangements include "In A Mellow Tone" as recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra; "Two Base HIt" as recorded by the Dizzy Gilespie Big Band. Vocal selections include "Just Friends" "The Man I Love" "Something's Gotta Give" and "Round Midnight"

Christopher Nichols (University of Delaware Associate Professor of Clarinet) and the Copeland String Quartet (composed of string musicians from the Delaware Symphony Orchestra) collaborate to present a program of autumnal music for clarinet and strings. This program features Carl Maria von Weber’s Clarinet Quintet in B-flat major, Op. 34 and Johannes Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op. 115, which are among the most celebrated works in this medium.

Bruce Tychinski is Professor of trombone at the University of Delaware where he teaches applied lessons, directs the trombone choir and UD Slides jazz trombone ensemble, and hosts an annual Trombone Day event.  Dr. Tychinski is a member of the Washington Trombone Ensemble, the Nittany Trombone Quartet, is principal trombonist of the Johnstown Symphony and second trombonist of the Lancaster Symphony.

The Calidore String Quartet is recognized as one of the world’s foremost interpreters of a vast chamber music repertory, from the cycles of quartets by Beethoven and Mendelssohn to works of celebrated contemporary voices like György Kurtág, Jörg Widmann, and Caroline Shaw. For more than a decade, the Calidore has enjoyed performances and residencies in the world’s major venues and festivals, released multiple critically acclaimed recordings, and won numerous awards.

Italy, with its rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and vibrant spirit, has served as an enduring muse for countless composers, inspiring some of the most beloved and celebrated works in the classical repertoire. Our program offers a journey through the heart of Italy, from the dramatic intensity of Rome to the sun-drenched landscapes of the countryside.

CañaBrava is a group born in 2014 in Bogota with the aim of interpreting, adapting and creating traditional Colombian and Latin American music for this format. CañaBrava is characterized by its constant search for a fresh and modern repertoire in conjunction with the flavors and customs of each Colombian region, which is why much of it is composed, arranged and adapted by their members, providing originality and a space for artistic development of high quality.

The UD Wind Ensemble presents their final concert of the academic year. The group will be joined by the Millville High School Symphonic Band and their director, Mr. Robert DeSantis. The program will feature (among many other wonderful works): guest faculty artist Joanna McCoskey Wiltshire, clarinet, performing James M. David's "Auto '66," music by UD Alum, Ryan McQuay Meredith, and Ingolf Dahl's "Sinfonietta," a cornerstone work of the wind repertoire. This is a program not to miss!

The Graduate Percussion Group will be performing a concert with a range of old and new percussion literature, from John Cage to a new commission to be premiered by the group.  The concert will also include works by Koshinski, Levitan, and Seo.

In the concert program, "Who We Are," three choirs- University Singers, Concert Choir, and Resound Gospel Choir explore themes of identity and self-discovery. The concert program was built by students who brought their unique experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives to the table, resulting in a diverse program of pieces in multiple languages from varying cultures.

The Practical Studies in World Percussion course will demonstrate topics discussed and learned throughout the spring semester which was focused on cross-cultural drumming.

 

The UD Steelbands will present repertoire from Trinidad and Tobago, as well as classical, jazz, and pop genres arranged for steelband.

UD Chorale's sole Spring engagement is not one to miss! This semester's concert is all about emerging from absolute chaos, into the purest of serenity. The wacky works of Eric William Barnum, Ken Steven, and Benjamin Britten, contrast greatly from the amity evoked by the compositions of Paul Mealor, Frank Ticheli, and Tim Brent, creating a diverse program which promises to take you by the hand through soundscapes both luscious and jarring.

"Harlem Airshaft" by Duke Ellington and Manning Sherwin Tom's "A Nightingale Sang In Berkley Square" will also be performed, along with "The First Circle" by Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays.  

Jazz Ensembles I & II

During the past six years, the Salon Trio has performed throughout the Washington metro area in a program called 'Salon Concerts.' These concerts are presented in the homes of patrons of the arts willing to host and fund a chamber music recital. As part of these concerts, patrons and their invited guests share an up-close and personal encounter. This musical experience not only stimulates the audience’s love of music but also develops a relationship between the trio and their audience. During each concert, they share personal stories and anecdotes about the composers as well as their knowledge of the music. Following each performance is a reception hosted by the homeowner, providing an opportunity for one-on-one feedback and an informal and relaxing interaction with guests.

The Salon Trio, Guest Artist Recital

The Calidore String Quartet is recognized as one of the world’s foremost interpreters of a vast chamber music repertory, from the cycles of quartets by Beethoven and Mendelssohn to works of celebrated contemporary voices like György Kurtág, Jörg Widmann, and Caroline Shaw. For more than a decade, the Calidore has enjoyed performances and residencies in the world’s major venues and festivals, released multiple critically acclaimed recordings, and won numerous awards. The Los Angeles Times described the musicians as “astonishing,” their playing “shockingly deep,” approaching “the kind of sublimity other quartets spend a lifetime searching.” The New York Times noted the Quartet’s “deep reserves of virtuosity and irrepressible dramatic instinct,” and the Washington Post wrote that “four more individual musicians are unimaginable, yet these speak, breathe, think and feel as one”.

The UD Percussion Ensemble presents their spring program: “Hot Off the Press" - an eclectic collection of brand new works for percussion receiving either their first or second performance.  Styles will include cross-cultural aesthetics and contemporary trends in percussion composition alongside more traditional compositional approaches.

Jazz is America's music and the U.S. Navy Band Commodores, the Navy's premier jazz ensemble, have been performing the very best of big band jazz for the Navy and the nation for 50 years. Formed in 1969, this 18-member group continues the jazz big band legacy with some of the finest musicians in the world. The Commodores' mission includes public concerts, national concert tours, ceremonial support in honoring our veterans, jazz education classes and clinics, and protocol performances for high-level military and civilian government officials.  

US Navy Band Commodores

Two UD Jazz Chamber groups will perfrom works from MIles Davis, George Gershwin and John Coltrane. The opening group will feature vocalist Viktoriia Riabukhina. The second group will be performing original compositions developed this semester.

Jazz Chamber Ensembles

Two UD Jazz Chamber groups will be joined by the 'UD Slides' for this concert. Standards from Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Jerome Kern, Billie Holiday and Herbie Hancock will be featured.

The UD Faculty Jazz Ensemble will be performing various standards including Horace Silver's "Split Kick"; Clifford Brown's "Joy Spring" and Sonny Rollins' "Airegin."

 

Joining the Faculty Jazz Ensemble for this concert is the highly talented trumpeter, Nick Pietuszka.
