Praised by the Chicago Tribune for his “ incredible performance” violist Elias Goldstein has distinguished himself as one of the great instrumentalists of his generation. Prize winner in the leading viola competitions of the world, including the 2011 International Primrose Competition, the 2010 Lionel Tertis Competition, he is also the first American to be awarded a top prize in the the Bashmet International Competition in Moscow. He has achieved recognition a​​nd critical acclaim as a champion of his instrument, as the first violist invited to Carnegie Hall to perform all 24 Caprices by Paganini, a program that later toured the United States and Europe.

The 1925 Phantom of the Opera is a silent film that captivated audiences with its gothic atmosphere, dramatic storytelling, and Lon Chaney’s iconic performance as the Phantom.

Christiana Winds presents their fall concert comprised of 19th and 20th century classics from the wind quintet repertoire. Selections will enthrall the audience with a variety of atmospheres such as exuberant, reflective, and humorous. The program includes: Trois pièces brèves by Jacques Ibert; Pastorale by Amy Beach; Wind Quintet by August Klughardt; and Three Shanties by Malcolm Arnold.

 

An ensemble of five dynamic and brilliant players, Christiana Winds explores the exciting and unique tradition of wind chamber music from the 18th century to the present. In diverse settings from the concert hall to the school classroom, Christiana Winds brings to its audiences the freshness and immediacy of the wind-instrument tradition. As ensemble-in-residence in the University of Delaware School of Music, Christiana Winds performs a variety of music, often with guest artists, and has been active commissioning new works for wind quintet.

This concert features jazz standards - Secret Love arranged by Ray Brown, Beatrice arranged by Dave Bozenhard and Dizzy's Business arranged by Steve Brown. Original compositions by Todd Groves (woodwinds) and Nick Pietuszka (trumpet) Todd's "First State Blues" was recorded by the Faculty Jazz and will be on the CD due out later this year.

 

​Comprised of University of Delaware faculty members who are in demand as jazz performers in and around the Delaware Valley, the UD Faculty Jazz Ensemble is dedicated to the performance and education of America's classical music. The ensemble performs on campus as part of the School of Music’s concert series and is available for clinics and performances in schools and concert venues. Members of the UD Faculty Jazz Ensemble are Todd Groves, saxophones; Dave Bozenhard, guitar; Miles Brown, bass; and Tom Palmer, drums/piano.

A faculty-led new music initiative of the UD School of Music, New Music Delaware explores new works by modern, living composers. This event is part of the residency by Santiago Beis, composer and member of Onishi-Beis Duo, an electroacoustic improvisation duo of which Yoshiaki Onishi, Assistant Professor of Music Composition takes part. In this all-improvisation concert, Onishi-Beis Duo collaborates with Miles Brown, Assistant Professor of String Bass and Jazz.

Kenneth Thompkins, Associate Professor of Trombone at Michigan State University and Principal Trombonist of the Detroit Symphony will perform a trombone recital. Thompkins will perform music by African American composers William Grant Still, Kevin Day, and Brian Nabors as well as works by Alec Wilder and Ida Gotkovsky. Julie Nishimura, retired collaborative pianist of the University of Delaware School of Music, returns to perform alongside Mr. Thompkins on this program.

The Sassafras Brass Quintet is the premier brass quintet at The University of Delaware. Made up of all performance graduate students, the group seeks to perform a diverse range of music from classical Renaissance music to modern popular music. The Brass Quintet also prides itself on its ability to adapt while maintaining the highest level of performance.

The Symphonic Band (James Ancona, conductor) will feature the works of Samuel Hazo, Wataru Hokoyama, George Walker, Cait Nishimura, Gordon Jacob and Malcolm Arnold. Repertoire will include Lonely Beach (Normandy, 1944), the epic tone poem by James Barnes.

The work is an effort to delve deeply into the most current issues surrounding the core subject of wrongful imprisonment and exoneration, as well as a commitment to connect with the communities in which it is performed. We have embraced our role as advocates through the realization that our work cuts to the emotional core of the human experience surrounding these issues.

Vocal Point Presents: Acappellooza 2024!

Join the UD Wind Ensemble for a musical exploration of the complexities of the American experience. The ensemble will be joined by guest artist Jarrod Lee, who will perform Armando Bayolo's work "Last Breaths," which sets the final words of six young black men killed by police. UD student poet-collaborators from the Department of English will share their reflections in both printed form and through live poetry readings. Other works include Carolyn Bremer's "Early Light," Steve Danyew's "Into the Silent Land," Benjamin Horne's gorgeous setting of "Deep River," and Donald Grantham's masterwork "Southern Harmony."

The chamber music program combines individual musical virtuosity with the shared spirit of ensemble playing, building flexibility, teamwork, leadership, communication and entrepreneurial skills for students.

The Easterlies Woodwind Quintet, Graduate Ensemble-in-Residence

Praised for his warm, polished tone and his ability to infuse his characters with deep authenticity, baritone, Brian Carter, has delighted audiences on operatic stages throughout the United States. Memorable performances include the Figaro in Opera Delaware’s Il barbire di Siviglia; the title roles in Verdi’s Rigoletto and Macbeth at Sarasota Opera and Opera in the Heights, respectively; Ping in Turandot at Opera North; Sam in Trouble in Tahiti with Greensboro Opera; George in Of Mice and Men and Tonio in Pagliacci with Opera San José. Brian has also performed extensively on the concert stage as a soloist for oratorios including Messiah (Handel), Elijah (Mendelssohn), The Creation (Haydn), Magnificat (J.S. Bach), and Symphony No. 9 (Beethoven); as well as a recitalist, having sung programs which included Dichterliebe (Schumann), Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and Des Knaben Wunderhorn (Mahler), L’horizon chimérique (Fauré), Banalités (Poulenc), and Songs of Travel (Vaughan Williams). Dr. Carter has also taken an interest in stage direction both musical theater and opera. He has directed a productions of Andrea Chenier for Concert Opera of Philadelphia, The Drowsy Chaperone for Avon Grove Community Theater, and Fiddler on the Roof for The Brandywiners, Ltd. A graduate of San José State University and The University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Carter currently teaches applied voice on the faculty at University of Delaware School of Music and at the University of Pennsylvania.

By reimagining intimate solo works for the expansive orchestral palette, Ravel transformed these compositions into dazzling sonic landscapes, offering a unique opportunity to explore the rich and varied world of Impressionist music.

The two University of Delaware Jazz Ensembles will be perfoming a variety of arrangements. Each band will feature two new arrangements of "video game music" arranged by Mike Tomaro. Other arrangements include "In A Mellow Tone" as recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra; "Two Base HIt" as recorded by the Dizzy Gilespie Big Band. Vocal selections include "Just Friends" "The Man I Love" "Something's Gotta Give" and "Round Midnight"

Christopher Nichols (University of Delaware Associate Professor of Clarinet) and the Copeland String Quartet (composed of string musicians from the Delaware Symphony Orchestra) collaborate to present a program of autumnal music for clarinet and strings. This program features Carl Maria von Weber’s Clarinet Quintet in B-flat major, Op. 34 and Johannes Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op. 115, which are among the most celebrated works in this medium.

Bruce Tychinski is Professor of trombone at the University of Delaware where he teaches applied lessons, directs the trombone choir and UD Slides jazz trombone ensemble, and hosts an annual Trombone Day event.  Dr. Tychinski is a member of the Washington Trombone Ensemble, the Nittany Trombone Quartet, is principal trombonist of the Johnstown Symphony and second trombonist of the Lancaster Symphony.

CañaBrava is a group born in 2014 in Bogota with the aim of interpreting, adapting and creating traditional Colombian and Latin American music for this format. CañaBrava is characterized by its constant search for a fresh and modern repertoire in conjunction with the flavors and customs of each Colombian region, which is why much of it is composed, arranged and adapted by their members, providing originality and a space for artistic development of high quality.

The UD Wind Ensemble presents their final concert of the academic year. The group will be joined by the Millville High School Symphonic Band and their director, Mr. Robert DeSantis. The program will feature (among many other wonderful works): guest faculty artist Joanna McCoskey Wiltshire, clarinet, performing James M. David's "Auto '66," music by UD Alum, Ryan McQuay Meredith, and Ingolf Dahl's "Sinfonietta," a cornerstone work of the wind repertoire. This is a program not to miss!

In the concert program, "Who We Are," three choirs- University Singers, Concert Choir, and Resound Gospel Choir explore themes of identity and self-discovery. The concert program was built by students who brought their unique experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives to the table, resulting in a diverse program of pieces in multiple languages from varying cultures.

The Tempest Brass Quintet is the Graduate Brass Ensemble-In-Residence at the University of Delaware. The Practical Studies in World Percussion course will demonstrate topics discussed and learned throughout the spring semester which was focused on cross-cultural drumming.

 

The UD Steelbands will present repertoire from Trinidad and Tobago, as well as classical, jazz, and pop genres arranged for steelband.

UD Chorale's sole Spring engagement is not one to miss! This semester's concert is all about emerging from absolute chaos, into the purest of serenity. The wacky works of Eric William Barnum, Ken Steven, and Benjamin Britten, contrast greatly from the amity evoked by the compositions of Paul Mealor, Frank Ticheli, and Tim Brent, creating a diverse program which promises to take you by the hand through soundscapes both luscious and jarring.

The UD Jazz Ensembles will be performing "Tell Me A Bedtime Story" by Herbie Hancock; "As Time Goes By" by Herman Hupfield and "Daahoud" by Clifford Brown. "Harlem Airshaft" by Duke Ellington and Manning Sherwin Tom's "A Nightingale Sang In Berkley Square" will also be performed, along with "The First Circle" by Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays.

During the past six years, the Salon Trio has performed throughout the Washington metro area in a program called 'Salon Concerts.' These concerts are presented in the homes of patrons of the arts willing to host and fund a chamber music recital. As part of these concerts, patrons and their invited guests share an up-close and personal encounter. This musical experience not only stimulates the audience’s love of music but also develops a relationship between the trio and their audience. During each concert, they share personal stories and anecdotes about the composers as well as their knowledge of the music. Following each performance is a reception hosted by the homeowner, providing an opportunity for one-on-one feedback and an informal and relaxing interaction with guests.

The Los Angeles Times described the musicians as “astonishing,” their playing “shockingly deep,” approaching “the kind of sublimity other quartets spend a lifetime searching.” The New York Times noted the Quartet’s “deep reserves of virtuosity and irrepressible dramatic instinct,” and the Washington Post wrote that “four more individual musicians are unimaginable, yet these speak, breathe, think and feel as one”.

The UD Percussion Ensemble presents their spring program: “Hot Off the Press" - an eclectic collection of brand new works for percussion receiving either their first or second performance.  Styles will include cross-cultural aesthetics and contemporary trends in percussion composition alongside more traditional compositional approaches.

Jazz is America's music and the U.S. Navy Band Commodores, the Navy's premier jazz ensemble, have been performing the very best of big band jazz for the Navy and the nation for 50 years. Formed in 1969, this 18-member group continues the jazz big band legacy with some of the finest musicians in the world. The Commodores' mission includes public concerts, national concert tours, ceremonial support in honoring our veterans, jazz education classes and clinics, and protocol performances for high-level military and civilian government officials.

Two UD Jazz Chamber groups will perfrom works from MIles Davis, George Gershwin and John Coltrane. The opening group will feature vocalist Viktoriia Riabukhina. The second group will be performing original compositions developed this semester.

Two UD Jazz Chamber groups will be joined by the 'UD Slides' for this concert. Standards from Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Jerome Kern, Billie Holiday and Herbie Hancock will be featured.

The UD Faculty Jazz Ensemble will be performing various standards including Horace Silver's "Split Kick"; Clifford Brown's "Joy Spring" and Sonny Rollins' "Airegin."

UD Schola Cantorum's Spring Concert presents to you a choral-orchestral celebration! Flitting between the 18th Century and the 21st Century, Schola will perform the classic works of Antonio Vivaldi alongside the exciting contemporary compositions of Patrick Hawes and Dan Forrest, all under the direction of Dr. Paul Head. Forrest's settings of Psalm texts bookend an exciting and glorious alternation between movements of Vivaldi's Dixit Dominus, and Patrick Hawes' Beatitudes, ensuring a diverse and engaging experience of sacred musical works spanning 300 years of music history.

The Zinck-Chicha Duo was founded in 1985 by French violinist Bernard Zinck and pianist Carole Chicha when they were both students at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris in the chamber-music class of Geneviève Joy-Dutilleux. After winning first prize in chamber music, the two musicians lost sight of each other for more than forty years. Bernard Zinck decided to move the United States to continue his musical training, ultimately establishing his career as a soloist and teacher after winning the Yehudi Menuhin Trust Award in 1992. After winning several prizes in international competitions (Vercelli and Marsala), Carole Chicha has devoted herself to chamber music and teaching.

The UD Wind Ensemble presents its annual Concerto Winners concert showcasing outstanding student performers who were selected as winners of this year's Concerto Competition. The program features flutist Robert Strauss performing Griffes's "Poem," and the Tempest Brass Quintet performing Ewazen's "Shadowcatcher." Also on the program, is the evocative and visceral "Tarot" by composer Lindsay Bronnenkant.​

Wind Ensemble

Founded in 1996, The U.S. ARMY BAND WOODWIND QUINTET is one of the Army’s premier chamber ensembles. An element of The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own”, the quintet is frequently called upon in support of high-level military and civilian events at the White House, the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, and other locations around Washington, DC.

The Easterlies are thrilled to present a recital made up almost entirely of new compositions and arrangements for woodwind quintet. These include the premiere of A.J. Perry's "Cloud Decks and Turbines" arranged for woodwind quintet, a set of arrangements for voice and woodwind quintet, and the premiere of Kevin Romano's "Nowhere Else," a new work written especially for the group. The program concludes with a staple piece of quintet repertoire from the classical era.

Symphony Orchestra

The Concert Choir will present a program titled, "We Call this Place Our Home," including an original arrangement by the choir as well as compositions by female, African American, Canadian, and Iranian composers. Resound will present a program including Gospel music from South Africa during the Apartheid Era, Freedom Songs and Spirituals, and Contemporary Gospel that radiates joy as a means of resistance. Finally, USingers will present works centering around female empowerment from their recent invited performance at the Eastern Division American Choral Director's Association (ACDA) Conference.

MIKE TOMARO  is a saxophonist, composer, arranger, and educator based out of the Pittsburgh, PA area. He is the Director of the Jazz Studies Program at the Mary Pappert School of Music at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA, a position he has held since 1997. Mike has over 200 published compositions and arrangements. His work in all capacities can be heard on numerous recordings, including 5 of his own, the latest being “4 Seasons” on the MCG Jazz label. This recording was released in October 2023 and is available on all streaming platforms. It features 10 new tracks of original music.

Formed in the fall of 2023 at the University of Delaware, the Trellis String Quartet is composed of violinists Dallas Noble and Leo Matsuoka, violist Zach Levin, and cellist Priscilla Kim. Recruited for the University’s Graduate String Quartet Fellowship, the Trellis String Quartet are currently pursuing their Master’s in Performance under the mentorship of the Calidore String Quartet. The group takes their name from the architectural structure, trellis, which is a framework of interwoven materials onto which plants grow. This Artist Collage Concert celebrates the internationally acclaimed artists that have been invited to campus for the UDIPS weekend with snapshot performances from each performer.  Artists that will be featured include: Escape Ten (percussion duo), The United States Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, Josanne Francis (steel pan), Quey Percussion Duo, and Ari Hoenig (drum set) with the UD Faculty Jazz Ensemble.

MICHAEL SCHUTZE is a much sought-after pianist and collaborative artist across Europe and in the United States. In his professional career he has appeared as accompanist for international stars such as renowned baritones Olaf Baer and Andreas Schmidt, and most recently for René Pape, as well as for singers of the younger generation such as mezzo-soprano Kathrin Goering (Opera Leipzig), tenor Timothy Oliver, baritone Christoph Pohl and Bass Georg Zeppenfeld of the Semperoper Dresden and tenor Manuel Günther from Bayrische Staatsoper Munich. He has regularly played for master classes given by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Andreas Scholl, Peter Schreier, Brigitte Fassbaender, Edith Mathis and Norman Shetler and cellist Peter Bruns.

Violist ERIC NOWLIN has performed extensively throughout the United States as well as abroad. He currently serves as Principal Viola of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Nowlin’s performance of Berlioz’ Harold in Italy with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra was described by Classical Source as “outstanding…his distinctive timbre and sovereign musicianship at one with Slatkin’s perfectly paced account… totally compelling.” Past accomplishments include receiving second prize in the prestigious Walter W. Naumburg Competition, first prize in the Irving Klein International String Competition; first prize in the Hellam Young Artists Competition; grand prize in the Naftzger Young Artists Competition; and winner of the Juilliard Viola Concerto Competition. Performances have included solo engagements with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Springfield Symphony in Missouri, Santa Cruz Symphony, Peninsula Symphony, and the Kumamoto Symphony in Japan, as well as recitals in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto, and Mexico.

Patrick Williams, associate principal flutist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, will present a recital with pianist Mark Livshits.

 

 

PATRICK WILLIAMS was appointed associate principal flutist of the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2018 by Maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin. He was previously the principal flutist of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and co-principal flutist of the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra in Nishinomiya, Japan. Mr. Williams has also performed in ensembles such as the Chicago Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Columbus Symphony, the Fort Worth Symphony, the Princeton Symphony and the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra in Sapporo, Japan. During the 2010 and 2011 seasons he was the Flute Fellowship recipient at the Aspen Music Festival mentored by Mark Sparks. Mr. Williams has collaborated with Maestros Sir Simon Rattle, Vladimir Jurowski, Fabio Luisi, Sir Neville Marriner, Robert Spano, Michael Stern, Rossen Milanov, and Otto-Werner Mueller, among others.

Still Breathing is a course at the University of Delaware School of Music which organizes two concerts per semester, showcasing works by UD student composers as well as contemporary pieces. Its aim is to foster and cultivate composer-performers, while creating a space for collaboration among composers and students at the UD School of Music.

DR. ELIZABETH MORGAN studied at the Juilliard School (B.M. and M.M.) where her principal teachers were Robert McDonald and Yoheved Kaplinsky. She then obtained a Ph.D. in musicology from UCLA, as well as a D.M.A. in piano performance, working with musicologist and MacArthur fellow, Susan McClary and pianist Walter Ponce. She currently serves as Associate Professor of Music at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.

Violinist ELICIA SILVERSTEIN, 2020 winner of the BBC Music Magazine Best Newcomer Award has garnered praise on the international stage for her bold, nuanced and insightful performances of repertoire ranging from the 17th to the 21st century.  Equally at home as a performer on historical and modern instruments, as a soloist with orchestra, giving recitals and playing chamber music, her “wonderfully inventive” playing (The Strad) and her “highly emotionally intelligent” (Gramophone) approach to music making distinguish Silverstein as one of the most important musical voices of her generation.

Norwegian-American violist ELIAS GOLDSTEIN has been praised by the Chicago Tribune for his "incredible performance" and by the Seattle Times as “ravishing”. Goldstein has distinguished himself as one of the great instrumentalists of his generation, frequently appearing as a soloist and chamber musician. Second prize winner of the 2011 Primrose & Bashmet International Viola Competitions, and a top prize-winner in the Tertis International Competition, he has achieved recognition and critical acclaim as a champion of his instrument. In 2016 he made his Carnegie Hall debut as the first violist invited to perform all 24 Caprices by Paganini, a program that later toured the United States and Europe.

Calidore String Quartet Seminar - Seminar Fellow Concert I

Co-Artistic Director of CMS since 2004, cellist David Finckel’s dynamic musical career has included performances on the world’s stages in the roles of recitalist, chamber artist, and orchestral soloist. The first American student of Mstislav Rostropovich, he joined the Emerson String Quartet in 1979, and during 34 seasons garnered nine Grammy Awards and the Avery Fisher Prize. His quartet performances and recordings include quartet cycles of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Dvorák, Brahms, Bartók, and Shostakovich, as well as collaborative masterpieces and commissioned works. In 1997, he and pianist Wu Han founded ArtistLed, the first internet-based, artist-controlled classical recording label. ArtistLed’s catalog of more than 20 releases includes the standard literature for cello and piano, plus works composed for the duo by George Tsontakis, Gabriela Lena Frank, Bruce Adolphe, Lera Auerbach, Edwin Finckel, Augusta Read Thomas, and Pierre Jalbert. In 2022, Music@Menlo, an innovative summer chamber music festival in Silicon Valley founded and directed by David and Wu Han, celebrated its 20th season. As a young student, David was winner of the Philadelphia Orchestra’s junior and senior divisions, resulting in two performances with the orchestra. Having taught extensively with the late Isaac Stern in America, Israel, and Japan, he is currently a professor at both the Juilliard School and Stony Brook University, and oversees both CMS’s Bowers Program and Music@Menlo’s Chamber Music Institute. David’s 100 online Cello Talks, lessons on cello technique, are viewed by an international audience of musicians. Along with Wu Han, he was the recipient of Musical America’s 2012 Musicians of the Year Award.

​Almita Vamos is a graduate of the Juilliard School where she studied with Mischa Mischakoff and Louis Persinger. Almita Vamos has won the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching six times, the ASTA Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award, and has been featured on "Sunday Morning" CBS and in the New York Times best-selling book, Battle Hymn of a Tiger Mom by Amy Chua. Mrs. Vamos has served on the violin faculty of Western Illinois University, University of Minnesota, the Oberlin Conservatory, and Northwestern University. Mrs. Vamos is currently on the faculty of the Music Institute of Chicago and spends summers teaching at the Chautauqua Summer Music Institute. Mrs. Vamos' students have won top prizes in many national competitions including Klein, Stuhlburg, Johannsen, Corpus Christi, Kingsville; and international competitions including Tchaikovsky, Carl Flesch, Menuhin, Bach (Leipzig), Szigeti, Kreisler, Neilsen, Paganini, and Montreal. Her students play in many orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, National Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic, and many others. She was a member of the Lydian Trio and the Antioch Quartet, and has recorded under Coronet and Rizzoli labels. She has concertized throughout North, Central, and South America, Europe, and Asia. Her recitals in New York won praise from the New York Times and Herald Tribune. She won the Concert Artist Guild Award, among many other prizes, and has performed recitals at the 92nd Street Y, Town Hall, and Carnegie Recital Hall. She continues to perform as a soloist and chamber musician in America and abroad. Mrs. Vamos and her husband have recently commissioned and recorded works for violin and viola by living composers in Chicago.

​The Calidore String Quartet is recognized as one of the world’s foremost interpreters of a vast chamber music repertory, from the cycles of quartets by Beethoven and Mendelssohn to works of celebrated contemporary voices like György Kurtág, Jörg Widmann, and Caroline Shaw. For more than a decade, the Calidore has enjoyed performances and residencies in the world’s major venues and festivals, released multiple critically acclaimed recordings, and won numerous awards. The Los Angeles Times described the musicians as “astonishing,” their playing “shockingly deep,” approaching “the kind of sublimity other quartets spend a lifetime searching.” The New York Times noted the Quartet’s “deep reserves of virtuosity and irrepressible dramatic instinct,” and the Washington Post wrote that “four more individual musicians are unimaginable, yet these speak, breathe, think and feel as one”. The New York City based Calidore String Quartet has appeared in venues throughout North America, Europe, and Asia including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, London’s Wigmore Hall, Berlin’s Konzerthaus, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Brussels’ BOZAR, Cologne Philharmonie, Seoul’s Kumho ArtsHall, and at major festivals such as the BBC Proms, Verbier, Ravinia, Mostly Mozart, Music@Menlo, Rheingau, East Neuk, and Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Always seeking new commissioning opportunities, the Quartet has given world premieres of works by Caroline Shaw, Anna Clyne, Han Lash, Huw Watkins and Mark-Anthony Turnage and collaborated with artists such as Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Marc-André Hamelin, Joshua Bell, Emerson String Quartet, Jeffrey Kahane, David Shifrin, Inon Barnatan, Lawrence Power, Sharon Isbin, David Finckel and Wu Han. Highlights of the 23-24 season include return appearances at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and People’s Symphony in New York as well as concerts in Seattle, Palm Beach, Ottawa, Toronto, Kalamazoo and a European tour of United Kingdom, Estonia and Germany. The Calidore team up with pianist and composer Gabriela Montero for a world premiere of her new piano quintet at the GilmorePiano Festival (MI) and also enjoy collaborations with the violist Matthew Lipman and harpist Bridget Kibbey, with whom they will premiere a new work by Sebastian Currier. Last season, the Calidore joined the Emerson String Quartet on their farewell tour in the Mendelssohn Octet and collaborated with clarinetist Anthony McGill and bassist Xavier Foley. The Quartet members also performed at Carnegie Hall alongside Anne-Sophie Mutter in a memorial concert honoring André Previn, featuring his compositions. In their most ambitious recording project to date, the Calidore is set to release the complete Beethoven’sString Quartets for Signum Records in the 24/25 season. Volume I, containing the late quartets, was released in 2023 to great critical acclaim. BBC Music Magazine said the Calidore’s performances “penetrate right to the heart of the music” and “can stand comparison with the best.” Their previous recordings on Signum include titles Babel with music by Schumann, Shaw and Shostakovich, and Resilience with works by Prokofiev, Janáček, Golijov and Mendelssohn. The Calidore String Quartet was founded at the Colburn School in Los Angeles in 2010. Within two years,the quartet won grand prizes in virtually all the major US chamber music competitions, including the Fischoff, Coleman, Chesapeake, and Yellow Springs competitions, and it captured top prizes at the 2012ARD International Music Competition in Munich and the International Chamber Music Competition Hamburg. The Quartet first made international headlines as the winner of the $100,000 Grand Prize of the 2016 M-Prize International Chamber Music Competition and it was the first and only North American ensemble to win the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship. The Calidore was also named a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist and in 2018, it was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, having won the LincolnCenter Emerging Artist Award a year prior. The Calidore is currently in residence with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York. In 2021 the Calidore members joined the faculty of the University of Delaware School of Music and serve as artistic directors of the newly established Graduate String Quartet Fellowship Residency and their own concert series at the University of Delaware. Prior to taking this position, they served as artist-in-residence at the University of Toronto, University of Michigan and Stony Brook University. Now dedicated teachers and passionate supporters of music education themselves, the Calidore is grateful to have been mentored by the Emerson Quartet, Quatuor Ébène, Andre Roy, Arnold Steinhardt, David Finckel, Günter Pichler, Guillaume Sutre, Paul Coletti, and Ronald Leonard.
