The Collegium Musicum provides instrumentalists and vocalists the opportunity to study and perform music from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The Collegium comprises a number of chamber ensembles formed around the interests and abilities of its members, providing the opportunity to learn new instruments and performance styles and to perform in formal and informal settings.

The University Singers are a select ensemble of treble voices at the University of Delaware, chosen by competitive audition at the beginning of each year, and comprised of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors from over 30 majors across the University. The University Singers perform 4 to 5 concerts each year, and tour regionally to Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

Capturing the energy and excitement of big band jazz, Jazz Ensemble I and Jazz Ensemble II are standard instrumentation big bands with saxophone, trombone, trumpet and rhythm sections as well as solo vocalists. The Delaware Youth Wind Ensemble (DYWE) brings together outstanding high school musicians (grades 8-12) from the greater Delaware area to rehearse and perform exciting and high-quality wind band literature. Open to students who play flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, string bass, piano, and percussion, DYWE offers an enrichment experience aimed to supplement (but not replace) students’ experiences in their own school bands.

The  UD Chorale is among the most highly regarded college choirs in the Eastern United States. In recent years, the choir has been invited to perform on both regional and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). They have also performed at Carnegie Hall in New York and Verizon Hall in Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center for the Arts. In addition to annual regional tours, the Chorale has traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia.

The Calidore String Quartet is recognized as one of the world’s foremost interpreters of a vast chamber music repertory, from the cycles of quartets by Beethoven and Mendelssohn to works of celebrated contemporary voices like György Kurtág, Jörg Widmann, and Caroline Shaw. For more than a decade, the Calidore has enjoyed performances and residencies in the world’s major venues and festivals, released multiple critically acclaimed recordings, and won numerous awards.

An ensemble of five dynamic and brilliant players, Christiana Winds explores the exciting and unique tradition of wind chamber music from the 18th century to the present. In diverse settings from the concert hall to the school classroom, Christiana Winds brings to its audiences the freshness and immediacy of the wind-instrument tradition. As ensemble-in-residence in the University of Delaware School of Music, Christiana Winds performs a variety of music, often with guest artists, and has been active commissioning new works for wind quintet.

Bruce Tychinski is Professor of trombone at the University of Delaware where he teaches applied lessons, directs the trombone choir and UD Slides jazz trombone ensemble, and hosts an annual Trombone Day event.  Dr. Tychinski is a member of the Washington Trombone Ensemble, the Nittany Trombone Quartet, is principal trombonist of the Johnstown Symphony and second trombonist of the Lancaster Symphony.  He is also co-founder of the First State Middle School Trombone Choir, an ensemble comprised of middle school trombonists from northern Delaware.

The UD Symphonic Band, led by Brooke Johnson and James Ancona ,is a group of 60-70 wind and percussion instrumentalists. Membership is open to all students from all majors at the University. The Symphonic Band performs standard concert band literature as well as transcriptions and music originally written for wind band.

The University of Delaware Graduate Percussion Group is composed of members Jacob Fullinwider, Nathan Jackman, Kyle Skinner, and Carl Tafoya. The goal of the Graduate Percussion Group is to perform works from the classical, contemporary, and world percussion genres to give any audience something they are bound to enjoy as well as experience something new. This program is no different, including pieces that incorporate standard and non-standard instrumentation, exploring the many sounds that are unique to our percussion repertoire.

This concert is a vibrant exploration of orchestral repertoire, illuminating music's capacity to both mirror cultural identity and to serve as a source of inspiration.

 

For this performance, we are thrilled to welcome UD faculty member Christine Delbeau (https://www.music.udel.edu/who-we-are/delbeau) to the stage. Italy’s Il Messagero’s enthusiastic review described her playing as, “… particularly compelling to follow the development of the music as guided by this great American soloist, so in tune with the music she so intimately interprets.” Delbeau has performed as collaborative pianist and soloist in several of the world’s most prominent venues, including the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Carnegie Hall and Weill-Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City, Boston’s Jordan Hall, and Philadelphia’s Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center. Internationally, she has performed at the Tonhalle in Zurich, Switzerland, and in concerts at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, France.

The UD Wind Ensemble has partnered with the UD Department of Art & Design to curate an art exhibition showcasing works by fine arts students to be displayed at the event. This unique partnership was inspired by the performance of Picture Studies, Adam Schoenberg's modern take on Modest Mussorgsky’s famous “Pictures at an Exhibition.”

UD Jazz Ensembles I & II

University of Delaware’s faculty experts will discuss the research and careers of the 2024 Nobel Prize winners at this year’s Nobel Symposium, Wednesday, Nov. 13 in the Harker ISE Laboratory Atrium. 

 

Hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences, this annual talk gives an opportunity to learn more about the prizes and their winners from faculty who conduct research in fields similar to the new laureates.

Violist Jacob Burk invites you to an extraordinary recital exploring the depth and brilliance of the viola repertoire. The program will feature Paul Hindemith's Concerto "Der Schwanendreher", a cornerstone of 20th-century viola music, and the virtuosic Viola Sonata by Henri Vieuxtemps. Adding a touch of Baroque elegance, selections from Bach's Cello Suite No. 6 will highlight the instrument's lyrical beauty. The recital will also feature the world premiere of a viola arrangement of SEVEN by Grammy-nominated composer Andrea Casarrubios, offering a powerful contemporary voice to this diverse program. A captivating journey through the ages, this recital is not to be missed.

Šarūnas Jankauskas, clarinet guest artist, and Mark Livshits, piano, present a program of compositions by Handel, Blardony, Ran, Jankauskas, Villani-Côrtes, and Sargon.

 

Clarinetist Šarūnas Jankauskas enjoys a rewarding performance and teaching career. He serves on the faculty at James Madison University, where he was a 2023 recipient of the campus-wide Madison Vision Teaching Award, a recognition that is solely decided by the students.

Praised by the Chicago Tribune for his “ incredible performance” violist Elias Goldstein has distinguished himself as one of the great instrumentalists of his generation. Prize winner in the leading viola competitions of the world, including the 2011 International Primrose Competition, the 2010 Lionel Tertis Competition, he is also the first American to be awarded a top prize in the the Bashmet International Competition in Moscow. He has achieved recognition a​​nd critical acclaim as a champion of his instrument, as the first violist invited to Carnegie Hall to perform all 24 Caprices by Paganini, a program that later toured the United States and Europe.

The 1925 Phantom of the Opera is a silent film that captivated audiences with its gothic atmosphere, dramatic storytelling, and Lon Chaney’s iconic performance as the Phantom.

Christiana Winds presents their fall concert comprised of 19th and 20th century classics from the wind quintet repertoire. Selections will enthrall the audience with a variety of atmospheres such as exuberant, reflective, and humorous. The program includes: Trois pièces brèves by Jacques Ibert; Pastorale by Amy Beach; Wind Quintet by August Klughardt; and Three Shanties by Malcolm Arnold.

This concert features jazz standards - Secret Love arranged by Ray Brown, Beatrice arranged by Dave Bozenhard and Dizzy's Business arranged by Steve Brown. Original compositions by Todd Groves (woodwinds) and Nick Pietuszka (trumpet) Todd's "First State Blues" was recorded by the Faculty Jazz and will be on the CD due out later this year.

 

​Comprised of University of Delaware faculty members who are in demand as jazz performers in and around the Delaware Valley, the UD Faculty Jazz Ensemble is dedicated to the performance and education of America's classical music. The ensemble performs on campus as part of the School of Music’s concert series and is available for clinics and performances in schools and concert venues. This event is part of the residency by Santiago Beis, composer and member of Onishi-Beis Duo, an electroacoustic improvisation duo of which Yoshiaki Onishi, Assistant Professor of Music Composition takes part. In this all-improvisation concert, Onishi-Beis Duo collaborates with Miles Brown, Assistant Professor of String Bass and Jazz.
