Wilmington Drama League

Wilmington, DE, United States

The Wilmington Drama League (WDL) is a prominent community theater organization with a rich history dating back to the late 1920s in Wilmington, Delaware. Initially, a casual assembly of Delawareans gathered in private homes to read and perform plays for one another. This group, which came to be known as The Wilmington Drama League, soon aspired to bring their passion for theater to a wider audience. Their first public performance was the comedy "Brewster's Millions," staged on December 13, 1933, at the old Lea Mills in Wilmington. Despite challenges such as snow-bound actors, which led to audience members being recruited to perform, the League's inaugural show was a success, marking the beginning of its journey. By the late 1930s, the need for a dedicated space became apparent, especially after a series of mishaps involving unstable coat racks and a fire escape incident. Despite the difficulty in securing mortgage money during that period, the League's determination did not waver. They managed to raise $60,000 and broke ground on a building that continues to serve as the home of the Wilmington Drama League to this day. Over the years, the League has faced its share of challenges. Notably, a production of "Journey’s End" experienced an unexpected set collapse on its closing night, and a severe storm during a performance of "Iolanthe" in the summer of 1945 earned the theater the nickname "The Drama Leak Theater." However, these setbacks did not deter the League, and a grant-funded roof replacement eventually resolved the leakage issue. The WDL building has undergone significant transformations to enhance its suitability for theater productions. The lobby has been expanded, the stage renovated, rehearsal spaces crafted, and modern lighting, sound, and projection equipment installed. These improvements were largely made possible through the generous contributions of grantors like the Longwood Foundation, the Delaware Division of the Arts, the Delaware Community Foundation, the Gannett Foundation, the Crystal Trust, and the donations from patrons and volunteers. Adhering to its do-it-yourself ethos, the League relies on volunteers for all aspects of production, including set construction, ushering, bartending, directing, acting, and technical work. The WDL boasts an extensive collection of costumes and props, some dating back to the 19th century, which serves as a valuable asset to the local performing arts community. Education in drama and theater is a key focus for the League, with initiatives such as the Chrysalis Players, its children’s theater wing, and Youth Acting Classes. The WDL is committed to being a hub for the arts, offering affordable and sometimes free theater, showcasing local artists' work, and providing a venue for various arts and charitable organizations. The volunteers, motivated by their passion for the arts and the pursuit of high-quality theater, are the lifeblood of the League. The Wilmington Drama League has been a stepping stone for several notable performers, including Aubrey Plaza, Tony Award winner Johnny Gallagher Jr., and actor, writer, and director Keith Powell, all of whom began their theatrical journeys at the WDL. The organization prides itself on being a community where individuals can pursue their love for the arts, whether they seek fame or simply a place to express their creativity. Throughout its history, the Wilmington Drama League has remained true to its founding mission: to cultivate a love for theater and to excel in its community-driven theatrical endeavors.
