Wilmington Symphony Orchestra

The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra (WSO) is a distinguished institution that has been providing the community with symphonic music of the highest caliber since its inception. The orchestra's mission is to offer performance opportunities for regional musicians and to engage in educational and community outreach programs, particularly aimed at nurturing the musical talents and appreciation of the community's youth. Founded in 1971, the WSO originally bore the name UNCW-Community Orchestra, a testament to its roots within the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) and the local community. The orchestra was the brainchild of Gaile Zack and Virginia Kusler, who worked tirelessly to garner support from the Chair of UNCW's Music Department, Dr. Richard R. Deas, and music professor William Adcock. Their efforts culminated in the formation of an ensemble of thirty-three volunteer musicians, who held their first rehearsal in November 1971 under the direction of Professor Adcock. The orchestra debuted with its inaugural concert on February 20, 1972, at UNCW's Kenan Auditorium. Over the years, the ensemble experienced significant growth in both size and skill, prompting a name change to the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra in 1986. Dr. Steven Errante has been at the helm as Music Director for 39 seasons, leading the orchestra to new heights of artistic achievement. Under his leadership, the orchestra has not only continued to present regular concerts but has also established the Music for Youth initiative. This educational and outreach effort includes the Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestras and the annual Richard R. Deas Young Artist Concerto Competition, both of which have profoundly influenced thousands of young musicians in the Cape Fear Region. The WSO's commitment to education and community engagement is further demonstrated through programs such as WSO's Classical Kids Concert, WSYO Chamber Ensembles, Making Noise with the Symphony, and the Concerto Competition. These programs are designed to foster a love for music and provide young artists with valuable performance experiences. Throughout its history, the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra has seen the baton passed through the hands of several dedicated music directors. Dr. William F. Adcock, Jr. served as the Music Director from 1971 to 1982, followed by Dr. Joe Hickman from 1982 to 1986. Since 1986, Dr. Steven Errante has been the guiding force, contributing to the orchestra's growth and community presence. The WSO also encourages support from the community through various contribution options, including donations, planned giving, and special events. These efforts ensure the continued success and sustainability of the orchestra, allowing it to remain a vital cultural asset to Wilmington and the surrounding regions.
