America in Concert: 250 Years of Music & Majesty

Jacksonville Symphony Principals Les Roettges and Kayo Ishimaru-Fleisher shine in Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp, a work of charm and delicate interplay. Poulenc’s Gloria fills Jacoby Symphony Hall with vibrant harmonies, brought to life by chorus and soloist. The evening closes with Tchaikovsky’s lush and expressive Serenade for Strings, a beloved masterpiece overflowing with warmth and passion that inspired the likes of famed choreographer George Balanchine.

The scores of Broadway dynamos Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein come alive with more impact than ever before in this tribute performance spotlighting the monumental scores of legendary musicals like The Sound of Music, Carousel and South Pacific. The Symphony and returning Broadway star Ashley Brown will immerse you in the musical stories of these famous maestros.

A program fit for kings and queens, Handel’s Zadok and Royal Fireworks Music, and Mozart’s Mass in C major were all created to honor monarchs of their day. The Symphony also performs music about the slippery slope that comes with power in Vivaldi’s La folia and Mozart’s Overture from the dastardly Don Giovanni. Jeannette Sorrell, founder and artistic director of the Cleveland-based Baroque orchestra, Apollo’s Fire, returns to Jacksonville to lead this explosive program.

Vaughan Williams’ Toward the Unknown Region soars with adventurous choral harmonies, while Barber’s Violin Concerto, performed by Concertmaster Adelya Nartadjieva, balances tender lyricism with fiery brilliance. The evening concludes with Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony, a dramatic and evocative masterpiece inspired by Scotland’s rugged beauty.
