Our summer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church comes to a close with a program in which Principal Horn Jessica Danz showcases her instrument’s elegance in Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4—jubilant, playful, and filled with the reminiscent sounds of hunting calls. Danz then conquers Villanelle, written by Dukas as a challenging exam piece for horn, sharing the soul and virtuosity of the instrument. The evening begins with Lutoslawski’s Overture, where the sharp sounds of the strings fill the intimate venue with an intensity that directly contrasts with the work that follows, Françaix’s light and delightful Sérénade. Haydn’s Symphony No. 90 brings the concert to a rousing “end”—only to quietly resume after four measures of silence, giving Haydn the last word with this classic joke.

Let us serenade you with the melodies of Strauss’ Serenade, a short and sweet tribute to romance directly influenced by the composer’s grand predecessor, Mozart. The ode to lyricism continues with Holst’s Lyric Movement performed by Principal Viola Brant Bayless, who captures the depth and freedom of the piece. In a showcase of his instrumental prowess, Bayless follows with Hindemith’s Kammermusik No. 5—the viola pitted in a melancholy monologue against the rich, dark timbres of the wind instruments. Finally, descend into Schoenberg’s achingly beautiful Transfigured Night, directly inspired by Richard Dehmel’s poem. This story tells of heartbreak and redemption as a woman confesses to her new partner that she is carrying another man’s child, yet he responds that their love will shape this child into one who is theirs. They embrace and continue their walk with a new transfigured perspective on life under the light of the moon and stars.

Grammy-nominated composer Anna Clyne takes traditional folk themes to a new level in PIVOT—a piece that embodies its name as the orchestra constantly “pivots” through the twists and turns of the music. Then, hear the bass in a new light as Principal Bass David Yavornitzky brings Koussevitzky’s Concerto for Double Bass to life, highlighting the rich notes of Russian romanticism. Delve into the music of four prolific composers, beginning with Haydn’s Symphony No. 61. Known as the “Father of the Symphony,” Haydn fills this exquisite composition with tender reflection. Then, Associate Concertmaster Kathryn Eberle takes the spotlight as soloist in an intimate performance of Beethoven’s rule-breaking Romance in G Major, aptly titled for its lovely, swelling theme and variations. Eberle’s musicality continues to glow in Saint-Saëns’ Havanaise, which was composed with “a crackling hotel room fire” in mind—this piece is as warm and lively as its inspiration. The evening concludes with Schubert’s Symphony No. 6, fondly dubbed the “Little C Major,” written when Schubert was just 21 years old.

The fandango, a popular Spanish dance style, finds new life in Márquez’s lively violin concerto, which, from its inception, has been tied to one of the world’s most esteemed violinists, Anne Akiko Meyers. Aaron Copland’s final and monumental Symphony No. 3, which he began writing in a Mexican village in the 1930s, incorporates his famous Fanfare for the Common Man—and Jennifer Higdon’s Fanfare Ritmico reflects on the speed at which our lives move.

The symphonic poem Winter Bells by Polina Nazaykinskaya is an ode to the whispers of nature and divine harmony, and Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet acts as a masterclass for storytelling through music.

How to Train Your Dragon in Concert

Creative Partner David Robertson concludes his first season with us! No guitar celebration would be complete without Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, the most famous guitar concerto there is (you’ll recognize it immediately!)—and it’s performed by the South Korean guitarist and DJ so talented she only needs one name, Jiji. Altogether, seven sensational electric and acoustic guitarists take their moment in the spotlight with the symphony for arrangements of music by The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, and works with influences from the Renaissance to rock. Everyone on stage synthesizes their talent in a fantastic Frank Zappa finale!

We have LIFT OFF! In collaboration with The Clark Planetarium, the symphony sends you and your little ones on an outer-space adventure! Watch the fantastic story of an imaginative child and an up-for-anything babysitter who travel the solar system in their state-of-the-art rocket ship (made of cardboard!). Their journey through the cosmos features the planetarium’s mesmerizing graphics and footage, and is brought to life with space-themed music from Star Wars, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Holst’s The Planets, and more.

Close out Women’s History Month and join us as conductor Anna Rakitina and violinist Sirena Huang make their debut on our stage. Huang, an international competition gold medalist, performs Dvořák’s Violin Concerto, inspired by traditional Czech dances and sure to be felt in every limb. Sibelius’ First Symphony is consuming, closing with the passionate Quasi una fantasia (“Like a Fantasy”). Also featuring Smetana’s Šárka—based on the Czech legend of an uprising of women called “The Maiden’s War”—this performance is a testament to all that women can do.

For nearly nine decades, kids have discovered the symphony orchestra through Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf—the tale of a young boy who captures a menacing wolf with the help of his animal friends! As the charming story is narrated, the music vividly illustrates the adventure with different instruments representing each character—from the chirping bird played by the flute, to the grumbling grandfather depicted by the bassoon, to Peter’s own heroic melody singing out in the strings.

This “sequel” to The Barber of Seville finds the boisterous barber, Figaro, ready to be married to his sweetheart, Susanna, as a scheming Count tries to break up the whole situation! Hilarious antics ensue—expect disguises, mistaken identities, and a lot of hiding in (and under) things—as this comedy plays out with music by one of the greatest composers of all time, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Charming and charismatic, jazz trumpeter Byron Stripling takes the stage with the symphony for an electrifying tribute to the great Louis Armstrong and his famous friends including Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, and so many others.

Performing the suite from the grandest opera by Rimsky-Korsakov, The Invisible City of Kitezh, is a first for the Utah Symphony. This program includes another first, Émergences-Résurgences by Swiss composer Michael Jarrell—a work inspired by Impressionist art and composed for the world’s most renowned violist, Tabea Zimmermann, who gives its U.S. premiere. Zimmermann also performs Weber’s Andante & Hungarian Rondo, an exciting return for a piece that Weber wrote for his brother. The program culminates with Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony, distinctive for its use of Ukrainian folk tunes.

You’ve heard of Don Juan. But have you felt the pain as he languishes in his ultimate solitude? Strauss’ Don Juan is a heartbreaking retelling of the lothario who searches for his soulmate until he succumbs to loneliness. The pain is exquisitely punctuated with the romantic melodies of Barber’s First Symphony, and former Associate Conductor Conner Gray Covington also takes us through works that span nearly 350 years—from Haydn (the “father of the symphony”) to the world premiere of Quinn Mason’s Trombone Concerto, written for Principal Trombone Mark Davidson.

Composed by Handel in 1741, the oratorio Messiah draws inspiration from both the Old and New Testaments, detailing the life of Christ in three parts. Together with our Utah Symphony Chorus, sing along with the beloved choral numbers of this famous composition—including the “Hallelujah” Chorus!—in an evening of joy and community. A performance unlike any other, the Messiah Sing-In is ranked as one of the “Top 100 Things to Do in Salt Lake City.”

This iconic film, which humorously critiques the industrialized world and its impact on humanity, comes alive with an orchestral performance that underscores Chaplin’s comedic genius.
