SBLO is recognized for its commitment to artistic excellence and innovation in all aspects of opera production. It plays a significant role in training, arts education, and audience development, thereby taking a leadership position in the operatic arts within the region. The opera company is also known for its efforts to perpetuate and enrich the operatic art form, ensuring that this traditional art continues to thrive and evolve in the modern era. In the 2023-2024 season, SBLO continues to showcase its innovative spirit with the production of "Our American Odyssey," a contemporary opera composed by Marjorie Rusche and directed by Emanuel Cristian-Caraman. Inspired by Homer's "The Odyssey" and the currents of our time, the opera blends mythological and modern themes, featuring characters such as Odysseus, Penelope, Cyclops, Circe, and Calypso. The cast includes Mary Martin as Penelope, with other roles interpreted by Carl Ratner, Elizabeth Schleicher, Eleni Taluzek, and Emma Sorensen. The music is described as a blend of contemporary opera, music theater, minimalism, and world music, promising a unique and engaging experience for opera enthusiasts and newcomers alike. The South Bend Lyric Opera's dedication to its mission and its innovative approach to opera production have established it as a significant cultural asset in South Bend, offering a rich and diverse program that contributes to the cultural fabric of the area.
