The DuPage Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is a distinguished community orchestra located in Naperville, Illinois. Founded in 1953 by Dr. Russell Harvey, the orchestra held its first concert in 1954 in Glen Ellyn with a modest ensemble of 45 musicians. Initially, the DSO's repertoire centered on shorter works, including early and light classical pieces, as well as popular compositions of the time. The organization was officially registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit on September 9, 1966, marking a significant step in its development. Over the years, the DSO has seen a remarkable transformation under the guidance of its leaders. After Dr. Harvey's retirement, having served 31 years at the helm, the DSO experienced a period of transition with various guest conductors. The search for a new musical director concluded with the appointment of Maestra Barbara Schubert, who has since led the orchestra to new heights. Under her dynamic and innovative leadership, the DSO has expanded both in quality and in the breadth of its offerings. Today, the orchestra boasts around ninety professional-level volunteer musicians and provides a rich season of full symphonic concerts, family programs, and outreach events, aimed at delivering both an enticing and educational experience to its audiences. Maestra Barbara Schubert, the second music director in the DSO's history, has been recognized for her artistic excellence, vibrant conducting style, and creative programming. Her accolades include being named the 2003 Conductor of the Year by the Illinois Council of Orchestras. Schubert's extensive musical knowledge and experience, which includes a repertoire of over 2,500 works, have been instrumental in propelling the DSO forward. Her career began while studying music and mathematics at Smith College, followed by graduate work at the University of Chicago and conducting studies with notable instructors such as Otto-Werner Mueller and Pierre Boulez. Maestra Schubert's commitment to music extends beyond the DSO; she also serves as the Music Director and Conductor of the University of Chicago Symphony Orchestra and New Music Ensemble, as well as the Park Ridge Fine Arts Symphony. Her contributions to the field of conducting have been recognized through her past presidency of the Conductor's Guild, and she is known in the Chicago area for her ability to enhance the quality and scope of the symphony orchestras she directs. The DuPage Symphony Orchestra's mission is to transform hearts, minds, and communities through music. It achieves this by providing inspirational performances, educational programs, and community engagement. The DSO's commitment to cultural enrichment is evident in its dedication to musical excellence and its efforts to connect with the next generation of musicians and audiences alike. The orchestra performs at the Wentz Concert Hall, located at 171 E. Chicago Avenue in Naperville, IL, and continues to be a vital part of the cultural fabric of the community. With a vision that extends beyond the concert hall, the DSO remains a beacon of artistic expression and education in the Chicagoland area.
