Knox-Galesburg Symphony

Galesburg, IL, United States

The Knox-Galesburg Symphony (KGS) is a distinguished musical institution with a rich history dating back to its inaugural subscription season in 1951. The first series of three concerts were held at Beecher Chapel in Galesburg, Illinois. As the symphony's audience expanded, the venue shifted to the Central Congregational Church, followed by Harbach Theatre, and ultimately settling at the Orpheum Theatre, which remains its current home. Over the years, the KGS has broadened its offerings by adding two additional subscription concerts to its season and introducing non-subscription events, including the annual Pops concert. The symphony is deeply invested in arts outreach and education, implementing programs such as Music Mornings at the Galesburg Public Library, Music Memories for students at the Orpheum, the annual Young Pianists Competition, in-school tours, and music appreciation classes. These initiatives underscore the symphony's commitment to fostering musical knowledge and appreciation within the community. The symphony draws its talented musicians from a 100-mile radius and has hosted guest artists of regional, national, and international renown. The quality of the KGS's performances is akin to that found in much larger cities, and its concerts are frequently broadcast on public radio stations, extending its reach beyond the immediate geographical area. In 1997, the KGS embarked on a tour of Spain, delivering sold-out performances in cities such as Lleida, Reus, Girona, and at the prestigious Palau de la Musica in Barcelona. The following year, the symphony was chosen by composer Eric Speier to perform his film score for a Columbia Tri-Star Home Video, a testament to the KGS's growing reputation. The symphony's 50th Anniversary in 2001 was marked by a collaborative performance of The Nutcracker with the Saint Louis Ballet. The Knox-Galesburg Symphony is a cultural beacon for Galesburg and the west-central Illinois region, reflecting the area's dedication to the arts. The symphony's high artistic standards and innovative programming have garnered numerous accolades from the Illinois Council of Orchestras, including awards for Orchestra of the Year, Conductor of the Year, General Manager of the Year, Cultural Leadership of the Year, Programming of the Year, Community Relations of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Board President of the Year, and Contributor of the Year. Additionally, the ICO has recognized Knox College, NAEIR, and Wells Fargo Bank with Meritorious Awards for their unwavering support of the Symphony. The Knox-Galesburg Symphony continues to play an integral role in the cultural fabric of its community, offering exceptional musical experiences and educational opportunities that enrich the lives of residents and visitors alike.
