Southwest Symphony Orchestra

Palos Heights, United States

The Southwest Symphony Orchestra (SSO), located in the Chicago Southwest and South Suburban areas, is a community orchestra with a rich history dating back to its inception in the spring of 1964. Founded by Alfred Aulwurm, a violinist, teacher, and conductor with extensive experience, the SSO was established with the support of Daniel Seyman, an Oak Lawn businessman and accomplished violinist. The orchestra's first concert was held on December 4, 1964, at Evergreen Park High School. The program format, which featured a major symphonic work in the first half and shorter, lighter pieces in the second half, often concluding with a medley from a well-known stage musical, quickly became popular with audiences. Over the years, the SSO has showcased a variety of soloists and performing groups, presenting symphonies, overtures, suites, and medleys by renowned composers. The orchestra initially performed at the Evergreen Park High School Auditorium, which seated 720, until 1974 when it moved to a larger venue at Mother McAuley High School. In 2000, the orchestra briefly returned to Evergreen Park High School before settling in its current location in 2001—the 1,200 seat auditorium in the Martin and Janet Ozinga Chapel at Trinity Christian College. Following Alfred Aulwurm's retirement in 1990, the SSO conducted a search for a new conductor, resulting in the appointment of David L. Crane as Music Director in 1992. Under Crane's leadership, the orchestra has seen a significant improvement in performance quality and has expanded its influence in the local community. With a population exceeding a million residents in the South Suburban area, the SSO aims to grow in both size and quality, continuing to enrich the musical life of the region. The governance of the SSO is overseen by a Board of Directors, composed of volunteers elected for a 3-year term by a quorum of current board members. The Board determines policies, approves expenditures, and conducts all business related to the symphony. The directors are responsible for various tasks essential to the operation of the orchestra. The current board includes Rosanne Arnold as President, Tom Hallett as Vice President, Shari Ebert as Recording Secretary and Orchestra Manager, Jim Brett as Corresponding Secretary, and several other dedicated members. The SSO encourages community involvement and is always looking for new board members who are interested in supporting the arts. Additionally, the orchestra is supported by sponsors and affiliates, contributing to its sustainability and growth. Those interested in getting involved with the SSO or becoming a board member are invited to contact the organization directly for more information.
