Newton Mid-Kansas Symphony Orchestra

Newton, United States

The Newton Mid-Kansas Symphony Orchestra (NMKSO) is a distinguished community orchestra that has been serving Newton, Harvey County, and the surrounding areas since its establishment in 1956. Renowned for its classical music performances, NMKSO is driven by local musicians who dedicate their talents to presenting a variety of symphonic works to the public. The orchestra's annual season features two classics concerts, summer chamber music, school outreach programs, and special events, all of which contribute to the cultural richness of the community. The mission of NMKSO is to serve as an exceptional community orchestra, advocating for and performing symphonic music that resonates with the residents of Newton and the neighboring regions. The vision of NMKSO is to function as a community-based organization that offers local residents the chance to both perform and enjoy a diverse range of orchestral literature. Through its concerts and outreach initiatives, NMKSO aims to educate, inspire, and contribute to the artistic, economic, and cultural vitality of the community it serves. The orchestra is composed of a mix of professional and community musicians, educators, and outstanding students, all of whom come together to share their passion for music. NMKSO's commitment to excellence is reflected in its engagement of national and international musicians, its commissioning of new works, and the hosting of world premieres. At the helm of the organization is Dr. Chris David Westover-Muñoz, who has been serving as the Music Director/Conductor since 2021. His leadership follows a succession of esteemed past directors, including Thomas Douglas (2011-2019), Diego Sánchez Haase (2005-2009), and Daniel Hege (1993-2004), each of whom has contributed to the orchestra's growth and reputation. Jill Gatz has been a pivotal figure in the administration of NMKSO, holding the position of General Manager since 2002. Her responsibilities involve season planning in collaboration with the Music Director and Board of Directors, engaging orchestra musicians and soloists, and overseeing the organization's general business affairs. Gatz also showcases her musical talent as the principal clarinetist of the orchestra. NMKSO is governed by a dedicated Board of Directors, co-presided by Rochelle Glover and Ken Rodgers, with William R. Beck as Vice-President, Ben Lichti as Treasurer, and Deborah Hamm as Executive Secretary. The board is supported by a team of members and honorary members who contribute to the strategic and operational success of the orchestra. In addition to its Board of Directors, NMKSO is supported by the NMKSO Guild, a group of associates and volunteers who assist with various aspects of the organization's functions, from consultation to social media engagement. NMKSO's enduring presence in the community is a testament to its commitment to musical excellence and its role in enriching the lives of those it reaches through the power of orchestral music.
