KU School of Music

The University of Kansas School of Music has a rich and storied history that is deeply intertwined with the musical heritage of the state of Kansas. Established in 1884 by the first KU Dean of Fine Arts, William MacDonald, the Department of Music has been an integral part of the University's academic offerings. MacDonald, a pianist himself, was also the founder and first president of the Kansas Music Teachers Association, highlighting the department's longstanding commitment to music education and community engagement. In 1923, the department witnessed significant growth under the leadership of Donald Swarthout, a pianist and conductor who served as Dean of Fine Arts until 1950. Swarthout's tenure was marked by his presidency of the Music Teachers National Association and his directorship of the KU Concert & Chamber Series. This series laid the groundwork for what would eventually become the Lied Center's arts programming, a cornerstone of cultural life at the University and beyond. The appointment of Carl A. Preyer in 1903, a renowned composer and pianist, signaled the beginning of an era of distinction for the KU Division of Piano. Since then, the faculty has boasted a list of accomplished musicians, educators, and performers who have contributed to the department's prestige. Notable faculty members since 1934 include Jane Abbott, Dennis Alexander, Richard Angeletti, Jan Chiapusso, Leon Fleisher, Malcolm Frager, Claude Frank, Thomas Gorton, Gary Graffman, Christopher Hepp, Byron Janis, Stephen Kort, Roy Hamlin Johnson, Robert Koenig, John Perry, Menachem Pressler, Richard Reber, Carole Ross, Angelica Morales von Sauer, Ramon Salvatore, Flora Silini, Martha Stacey, Nelita True, Robert Ward, and Jack Winerock. The University of Kansas has been the alma mater of numerous piano students who have gone on to achieve success in various musical, business, and academic fields. The School of Music's commitment to excellence in music education is evident in the achievements of its alumni and the continued prominence of its piano program. Throughout its history, the School of Music has expanded its offerings to include a wide range of areas of study, such as band, brass & percussion, choral, jazz, music education & music therapy, music theory & composition, musicology, orchestra, organ & church music, piano, strings, voice & opera, and woodwinds. The School also hosts a variety of events, camps, festivals, and research initiatives, fostering a vibrant and dynamic musical community.
