The Topeka Symphony Orchestra (TSO) is a cornerstone of the cultural scene in northeast Kansas, with a history that dates back to its formation as the Topeka Civic Orchestra in 1946. Founded by Washburn music professor Everett Fetter, the inaugural performance featured a modest ensemble of 60 individuals, comprising local talent, Washburn University students, and Topeka High students. This modest beginning marked the start of an organization that would grow significantly over the years, officially adopting the name Topeka Symphony Orchestra in 1980. Throughout its history, the TSO has been shaped by the long tenures of its conductors. Everett Fetter led the orchestra for its first 30 years, followed by Jack L. Herriman from 1976 to 1988. Dr. Strickler took over the baton, contributing 23 years of leadership until the conclusion of the 66th season in 2012. The stable leadership provided by these conductors has been instrumental in the Symphony's growth and success. Another pivotal development was the establishment of The Topeka Symphony Society in 1952. The Society's Board of Directors has been integral to the organization's operations, dedicating countless hours to policy setting and organizational management. The Symphony's evolution into a regional musical powerhouse would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of these volunteers. Financial support has also been crucial to the TSO's sustainability. The Topeka Symphony League, organized in 1968, has raised over half a million dollars to support the Symphony. The Symphony's endowment fund, created in 1990, has since amassed over 1 million dollars, ensuring the organization's continued vitality. Under the expert direction of Dr. Strickler, the Symphony's performances grew in scope and ambition, featuring world and U.S. premieres and hosting internationally acclaimed artists. The orchestra now boasts talented musicians from across northeast Kansas, reflecting the Symphony's status as a vibrant regional entity. In April 2013, the TSO announced the appointment of Kyle Wiley Pickett as Music Director and Conductor, marking only the fourth conductor in the organization's history. Chosen after a two-year search from over 125 global applicants, Maestro Pickett took up the baton on October 5, 2013, and has since been leading the TSO into an exciting new era. The Topeka Symphony Orchestra's mission remains to foster and promote an appreciation for fine music in the region by presenting high-quality performances and offering educational and performance opportunities for youth. The TSO offers a variety of ticket purchasing options to its patrons, including online sales, phone orders, and box office sales at performance venues. Located at PO Box 2206, Topeka, KS 66601-2206, the Topeka Symphony Orchestra continues to be a cherished institution, with Washburn University providing ongoing support for its events. The TSO's commitment to the community and its cultural enrichment is evident in its programming, outreach, and dedication to musical excellence.
