Hays Symphony

Hays, United States

The Hays Symphony Orchestra is a distinguished musical institution and the longest continuously running orchestra in the state of Kansas. Established in 1914, the Hays Symphony has a storied history of bringing symphonic music to life for audiences in Hays and the surrounding communities. This joint community-university ensemble is affiliated with Fort Hays State University and comprises approximately 60 musicians. These musicians include a mix of FHSU students and faculty, dedicated volunteers from the Hays area, and guest musicians from across Kansas. Financial and volunteer support for the Hays Symphony comes in part from the Hays Symphony Orchestra Guild, an independent non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) status, which has been operational since 1984. The Guild's mission is to provide the necessary financial and volunteer resources to support the orchestra's endeavors. Its volunteers are as diverse as the Symphony's membership, including FHSU faculty, students, staff, community musicians, teachers, and music enthusiasts. The Hays Symphony is always open to new musicians joining its ranks, whether for a single concert or for the entire season. Community members interested in participating are encouraged to contact the conductor, Dr. Brian Buckstead, to discuss their musical background and interest. The Symphony particularly has a standing need for string players, although the need for specific instruments may vary. FHSU students can join the Symphony based on recommendations from the university's music faculty and may also enroll in relevant courses. Additionally, the Hays Symphony Guild welcomes volunteers to assist with publicity and fundraising activities, offering various opportunities for community involvement. The Symphony's current conductor, Dr. Brian Buckstead, is a multifaceted musician with a rich background as a violinist, violist, conductor, and educator. He has performed and studied across the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia, and has appeared as a soloist with numerous ensembles. Dr. Buckstead's repertoire spans a wide range of musical eras and styles, from Baroque masterworks to contemporary compositions. His conducting experience is equally diverse, having led orchestras such as the Beloit College Orchestra, the Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra, and the University of Minnesota Duluth Chamber Orchestra, among others. Dr. Buckstead is also deeply committed to the education of young musicians and has been involved in initiatives such as Bring Back the Music, which aims to provide string instrument education to underprivileged schools. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from St. Olaf College and Master and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, all in violin performance. His academic research includes an exploration of the teaching and philosophy of John Kendall, a significant figure in string pedagogy and the Suzuki Method in the United States. Under the leadership of Dr. Buckstead, the Hays Symphony Orchestra continues its tradition of excellence, inviting the community to join in the celebration of music through its performances and educational outreach.
