The Czech National Symphony Orchestra, which performs regularly at the Špilberk International Music Festival, has collaborated with many world famous personalities from various musical fields. One of these personalities was Carl Davis, with whom the Czech National Symphony Orchestra repeatedly performed his highly successful project The Beatles Night. This project will be performed at Špilberk under the baton of conductor, composer, arranger and jazz pianist Kryštof Marek. Listeners can look forward to masterfully crafted orchestral arrangements of hits by the legendary “Beetles”, such as A Hard Day’s Night, Eleanor Rigby, Yesterday, Hey Jude, All You Need Is Love, Let It Be and many more.

He has sold over a million albums, four gold and six platinum records, numerous awards and several nominations for the prestigious JUNO award. “Toronto’s Matt Dusk has taken what he learned from the greats and adapted it to a modern audience,” wrote the LA Times.

June is a month when our thoughts are often fixated on the upcoming holidays to be spent travelling or by the water. Let’s make the wait more pleasant with beautiful music which is thematically related to such ideas. Indeed, it is water that provides the link – onomatopoeically and symbolically – between the programmes of these pieces. Don’t miss the supreme works of French and Italian Impressionism and the masterpiece Percussion Concerto by the Turkish composer and pianist Fazil Say as performed by the French star Adélaïde Ferrière under the baton of Brno-born Tomáš Hanus.

The National Theatre Brno - Janáček Theatre

Adélaďde Ferričre, a French percussionist of international renown, has performed in Brno once before, in early December 2023 at the Percussion Festival organised by the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts; she led a workshop and gave the closing concert, demonstrating her mastery of the marimba to great acclaim. While she is in town to perform Fazil Say’s Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra with Brno Philharmonic led by Tomáš Hanus (19 and 20 June 2025 at the Janáček Theatre), she has agreed to give a recital as part of the Philharmonic Chamber Series at Besední dům the same week. Her programme includes works by Johann Sebastian Bach and two luminaries of 20th-century music, the French composer of Greek origin Iannis Xenakis (1922–2001) and the Italian composer Franco Donati (1927–2000).

The legendary cabaret Chat Noir was founded by Rodolphe Salis in 1881. Alongside food and drink, it offered a rich artistic programme – songs, acrobatics, and shadow theatre. For struggling artists of Montmartre, it was a rare chance to perform, connect, and survive. Satie, who lived nearby, worked there as a pianist and songwriter, accompanying singers, comedians, and humorists. For one of them – Paulette Darty – he wrote the now-iconic chanson Je te veux, the very essence of Parisian cabaret.

In 1995, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Satie’s death, a project was premiered at the Bratislava festival Evenings of New Music (VEČERY NOVEJ HUDBY), brought to life by none other than John Tilbury. A group of composers were invited to respond in various ways to Satie’s charming four-hand “pear pieces” (Trois morceaux en forme de poire).

At the time when Erik Satie was composing, he was not regarded as a “real” composer. He faced skepticism and outright rejection. Yet within a few decades, he emerged as one of the most influential figures of the 20th century – with an impact that stretches from John Cage to Aphex Twin and today’s electroacoustic performers. Satie was ahead of his time and of the technology of his era – his music bears a striking resemblance to modern electronic sound. As John Cage foresaw more than 80 years ago, the music of the future would be “produced through the aid of electrical instruments.” SATIOLLAGE brings that vision to life.

The American chief conductor of Filharmonie Brno, Dennis Russell Davies will lead the performances of two works by famous US composers, Leonard Bernstein and Philip Glass, complemented by a piece by the Austrian Kurt Schwertsik inspired by the diaries of the celebrated Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. All three composers have been linked with Dennis Russell Davies by the bonds of art and friendship.

Do you like to flip through the calendar? Do you sometimes daydream when you look at it and imagine what happened on that day exactly 100, 150, 200… years ago? Do you enjoy anniversaries, preferably round ones, and holidays? We do, and accordingly we have also prepared a series of family concerts in the 2024/2025 season. We will commemorate important anniversaries of premieres of compositions, births of composers, musical events, holidays and so on, which are related to the respective period in which the concert takes place. The main dramaturge (the one who selects the compositions) is therefore time. And in a way you will be too, because we will give you the opportunity to choose one song for each concert – democratically, of course.

Alongside many smaller-scale pieces, the “Bohemian Beethoven” J.V.H. Voříšek left us a beautiful Symphony in D major, often compared with those by Beethoven himself, and the Grand Rondeau for piano trio and orchestra. Both show that although his footing was still firmly in the Classical era, he was ready to step out into the world of Romanticism – the same, indeed, applies to Beethoven.

Widely considered to be one of the most innovative and adventurous conductors/programmers in the classical music world, Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Dennis Russell Davies leads the Czech Republic’s own Filharmonie Brno  in a program that includes The Soraya’s first-ever performance of Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, better known as the New World  Symphony. Composed as Dvořák toured the US in the 1890s, the piece with its majestic fanfares, rich harmonies, and brilliant melodies, is widely considered to be the composer’s love letter to America. The pastoral landscape and folklore of Eastern Europe and America are further brought to life through the music of Czech composers Janáček, and Martinů.

For more than a half century, renowned American conductor Dennis Russell Davies has conducted many of the world’s finest orchestras and opera companies and is widely considered one of the most innovative and adventurous conductors in the classical music world. In 2018, Maestro Davies became the Artistic Director & Chief Conductor of the Filharmonie Brno, an orchestra with roots that go back to the 1870s, when then-young composer Leoš Janáček endeavored to establish a Czech symphony orchestra in Brno (the traditional capital of Moravia), now the second largest city in the Czech Republic after Prague. The present orchestra was created in 1956 and has been among the leading Czech orchestras in both size and importance, where the programing of works by Janáček has always been at the core of the orchestra’s repertory. Appropriately, Maestro Davies’s stimulating CAMA concert will feature an outstanding All‑Czech Program of works by three of the greatest Czech composers: Janáček, Dvořák, and Martinů. Maki Namekawa is a leading figure among today’s pianists, bringing to audiences’ attention contemporary music by international composers. In 2019 Philip Glass composed his first Piano Sonata especially for Maki Namekawa, which she premiered that year at Piano‑Festival Ruhr.
