Opera Kansas

Wichita, KS, United States

'''Opera Kansas is a non-profit organization dedicated to producing modern and rarely performed operas throughout the state of Kansas. Founded in 1985 by a group of eighteen individuals passionate about promoting quality opera performance in Wichita and beyond, Opera Kansas was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in December of that year. The organization's mission is to bring innovative, affordable, and accessible opera to communities and schools, while also providing emerging musicians with artistic opportunities in a respectful, professional environment. From its inception, Opera Kansas has been committed to integrating opera into the core history and literature curriculum of the K-12 school system and making opera more accessible by performing in retirement homes, parks, and other unusual venues across Wichita and southern Kansas. With a focus on integrity, honesty, professionalism, progressive thinking, and ethical practices, Opera Kansas values its people as its ultimate asset. The history of Opera Kansas is marked by its efforts to educate Kansans about opera and to foster appreciation for this art form. In its early years, the organization sponsored trips to live opera performances, offered opera appreciation classes, and presented film festivals featuring operas such as "Aida," "Turandot," and "La Forza del Destino." The company's first production, "An Evening with Amadeus," was staged in 1989 as part of the official River Festival and was followed by a decade of annual one-act opera presentations at the festival. Over the past three decades, Opera Kansas has brought numerous national and international opera performers to Wichita audiences, including Joyce DiDonato, Samuel Ramey, and Nicholas Saverine. The organization's leadership has included prominent Wichita community leaders such as Burton Pell, Willard and Jean Garvey, and Mary Koch. The current team at Opera Kansas is led by Dr. Matthew Schloneger, an accomplished operatic tenor, educator, and arts administrator who serves as the Executive Director. The Board of Directors includes Kristin Chisham as President, Charleen Ayers as Vice President, Rebecca Robbearts as Secretary, and Jesse Koza as Treasurer, among others. Opera Kansas continues to uphold its goals of providing innovative works, intimate community performances, a stage for new and rarely performed operas, and a focused partnership with the state’s K-12 school curriculum, all while maintaining a fiscally responsible organization of artistic excellence.'''
