Unicorn Theatre

Kansas City, MO, United States

Unicorn Theatre, founded in 1974 by three UMKC Theatre graduates, began as Theatre Workshop in a rented warehouse in Kansas City's River Market area. Renamed in 1981, it has since become a cornerstone of Kansas City's cultural landscape. Cynthia Levin, who joined in 1979 and became Producing Artistic Director in 1983, has been instrumental in its growth, directing over 300 productions. The theatre is known for its dedication to bold, new plays that address contemporary social issues, diversity, and inclusion. Notable milestones include joining the Actors' Equity Association in 1984, relocating to its current Main Street location in 1986, and expanding its facilities in 2008. Unicorn Theatre is a founding member of the National New Play Network and has premiered numerous award-winning plays, including Tony and Pulitzer Prize winners. The theatre continues to foster emerging talent and remains committed to producing thought-provoking works that reflect diverse perspectives.
