'''About Arizona Friends of Chamber Music''' The Arizona Friends of Chamber Music (AFCM) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting classical and contemporary chamber music in Southern Arizona. Founded shortly after World War II by a group of music enthusiasts, AFCM has grown from a small gathering of friends seeking respite from the heat into a prominent cultural institution that presents world-class chamber music performances. Initially named the Arizona Friends of Music to reflect a broader musical interest, the organization quickly focused on chamber music as its primary offering. The first concerts were held in a private piano studio near the University of Arizona campus, featuring live music played by local musicians. By 1948, AFCM was officially established, and it began importing artists from the Evenings on the Roof series in Los Angeles. To ensure quality, the volunteer board soon decided to book ensembles directly, bringing renowned musicians from around the globe to Tucson. Over the years, AFCM has hosted performances in various venues, including the Tucson Women’s Club, the Agricultural Hall at the University of Arizona, and the UA Liberal Arts Auditorium. In 1990, the organization found its permanent home at the Tucson Convention Center's Leo Rich Theater, where it continues to host concerts to this day. AFCM's programming includes a season of six or seven evening concerts featuring established ensembles, the Piano & Friends series showcasing emerging musicians, and the Tucson Winter Chamber Music Festival held each March. The organization has a history of identifying and presenting talented artists early in their careers, such as the Tokyo Quartet and pianist Lang Lang. The organization's mission has remained consistent throughout its history: to present first-rate performances of both well-known and lesser-played chamber music at affordable ticket prices. AFCM's commitment to accessibility is evident in its offerings of discounted tickets for students and free performances for school children. AFCM's concerts are accompanied by professionally-written program notes to enhance audience understanding and appreciation of the music. Additionally, AFCM hosts master classes that are open to the public, further contributing to the community's musical education. The organization's strategic plan for 2019-2022 outlines its ongoing efforts to develop a sustainable audience for chamber music through creative programming, outreach activities, and educational offerings. AFCM's dedication to chamber music as an intimate and conversational art form has made it a pillar of the cultural landscape in Tucson, enriching the lives of residents and visitors alike for more than seven decades.
