"Katja and Ivan" – that's Ivan Repušić, Chief Conductor of the Munich Radio Orchestra, and his wife Katja, a pianist and professor in Split. Together with string players from the radio orchestra, they open the doors of their very own salon. Brahms' almost symphonic piano quintet will be accompanied by, among other things, five cheerful and charming miniatures by Shostakovich, based on film and stage music. Katja and Ivan's compatriot Boris Papandopulo sends greetings from their shared homeland of Croatia in the form of his "Papandopulijada."

Alexander Gadjiev knows Chopin. At the 2021 Chopin Competition, he won second prize overall and first prize in the sonata category—the first prize winner with Serbian roots. Those who aren't already breathless after Chopin's virtuoso work can look forward to a fairytale fantasy by his Polish compatriot Stanisław Moniuszko. And what piece would be better suited for this than Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor? One of the most poignant melodies in music history opens the work. Sister Fanny begins the program, and Schubert's Second Symphony – a small rarity – culminates.

A long tradition of Christmas concerts connects the Regensburg Cathedral Choir and the Munich Radio Orchestra. And when the renowned lieder singer Benjamin Appl joins the choir, the former Cathedral Choir member meets "his" choir – the perfect setting for an atmospheric Wednesday evening with Christmas classics such as Peter Cornelius's "The Kings," the most beautiful excerpts from Bach's Christmas Oratorio, and many other heartfelt songs, choral pieces, and well-known melodies.

With "Zampa," French composer Ferdinand Hérold landed his greatest operatic success; after its premiere in Paris in 1831, the work also became popular in Germany and Italy. Welcome to the Munich Radio Orchestra's first chamber concert at a new venue, the Künstlerhaus am Lenbachplatz! Three central works will caress the ear this evening with the typical warmth of the Viennese string trio sound: Based on a piano sonata, Haydn's Opus 53 No. 1, scored for violin, viola, and cello, unfolds its plasticity and sonic volume. In his Serenade Op. 8, Beethoven achieved a fusion of stylized dance and classical form. Reminiscences of Mozart and Haydn characterize Schubert's fragmentary Trio, D. 471. The finale features three bon vivants from the pen of the Viennese-born and cosmopolitan violinist Fritz Kreisler: "Liebesleid," "Liebesfreud," and "Schön Rosmarin."

To round off the summer, the Munich Radio Orchestra will travel to the southern German regions for music festivals and concert series featuring international guests. In a Beethoven-Bizet program, star pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard will present Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto. Since its premiere in 2012, George Benjamin's opera has been a sensation, telling a story of passionate rebellion and painful self-discovery with extraordinary sounds and a tragic ending. Submission and control determine the life of Agnès, the wife of the much older Protector, until a young illustrator comes to their house to immortalize the life and work of the rich and powerful man. His ability to capture images and words on skin, as it were, awakens in Agnès a fascination for the symbols that are foreign to her, and she experiences what physical closeness and affection can trigger in her.

The medieval verses of the Marian sequence Stabat mater seem like a symbol of mourning that has endured for ages. Once sung in unison and humbly, the Stabat mater has inspired generations of composers, including the Pole Karol Szymanowski in 1926, whose oratorio-like Stabat mater incorporated elements of Polish folk and church music. Geographically and thematically close to each other are Pēteris Vasks' political and personal mourning work of the Musica dolorosa , Arvo Pärt's meditation on the Shroud of Turin and Witold Lutosławski's short Lacrimosa from the image-rich death sequence of the Dies irae.

French music has always been considered to be particularly vocal. For the artistic director of the BR Choir, Peter Dijkstra, this is a good reason to present a fine selection of choral music by four Frenchmen. The focus is on Gabriel Fauré's musical requiem, which is one of the great requiem settings of the classical-romantic tradition.

The trumpet is more versatile than almost any other musical instrument, and no one proves this better than the current artist in residence Matthias Höfs. The International Meistersinger Academy (IMA) not only offers outstanding singers excellent study opportunities but also paves the way for them to pursue a career. Ivan Repušić has shaped the Munich Radio Orchestra as its chief conductor since 2017. Before his departure at the end of the season, the shared successes deserve a fitting celebration – with a concert, of course! The evening will be enriched by musical contributions from important collaborators, including the Bavarian Radio Choir and the artists in residence of recent years. Ivan Repušić will certainly return to the Radio Orchestra at some point in the future.

Allow me to introduce you to George Onslow from France and Ludwig Thuille, born in Bolzano! Their works are rarely heard in the concert hall. However, Onslow's Quintet, Op. 81, which requires a perfectly balanced wind ensemble, is a worthwhile example of his style, entirely focused on beautiful sound and classical form. Thuille, in turn, influenced a large number of renowned students as a professor at the Royal Bavarian Music School in Munich. His Sextet, Op. 6, rightly puts the master himself in the spotlight.

The Requiem speaks of "the fears and sorrows of people in this time, of illness and death, of love and loneliness" – Hans Werner Henze wrote this funeral music in memory of Michael Vyner, a longtime friend and artistic director of the London Sinfonietta, who died young in 1989. Now the work, whose movements are reminiscent of the Latin requiem mass and yet find their eloquent expressiveness in the wordless sphere of instrumental music, is heard in memory of the important German composer.

He has film music as much in his veins as operetta and musicals: the American conductor Joseph R. Olefirowicz. Like the Munich Radio Orchestra, he also works in a wide variety of musical styles and is a master of perfect entertainment. This dream team will be presenting itself twice at the Rheingau Music Festival: The opening performance will feature the biggest hits of video game music in rich orchestral sound. On the second evening, the musical journey will take them to London's West End – with melodies from hit productions such as "Cats" and "The Lion King."
