Known for their “precision” in presenting “marvelous, unexpected” (Third Coast Review) performances, the Grossman Ensemble culminates a nine-week workshop-rehearsal cycle with the premieres of four works hot off the press. Conductor David Bloom conducts new music created in collaboration with composers Theo Chandler, Kyong Mee Choi, Phil Pierick, and David W. Sanford.

Grossman Ensemble – Woven Light

The Grossman Ensemble, in residence at the Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition, begins the 2025-26 concert season by adding four new works to its already impressive roster of 75 world premieres. Conductor Micah Gleason leads premieres by composers Kay Rhie, Ryan Chase, Mikel Kuehn, and Inés Thiebaut in a dynamic performance showcasing diverse and complex sonic worlds.

Grossman Ensemble – Form & Figure

Since its inception in 2018, the resident ensemble of the University of Chicago’s Center for Contemporary Composition has premiered 60 new musical works. Conductor Kiki Kilburn leads the Grossman Ensemble for the premiere of four more new works created as part of a nine-week collaboration with “trailblazing” (Los Angeles Times) Pulitzer Prize finalist and GRAMMY-nominated composer Andy Ahiko, UChicago's own PhD composer Benjamin Martin, multi-award-winning composer and sonic artist Nina C. Young, Shih-Hui Chen, known for her “deep musical intelligence” (Wire Magazine). Followed by an after-party with the artists.

The Grossman Ensemble presents "Tapas," a captivating musical feast that showcases an eclectic array of chamber works. This performance features compositions from renowned international composers such as Franco Donatoni, David Lang, Helena Tulve, Wenbin Lyu, and Saed Haddad. Adding to the allure, the event includes world premieres by Chicago-based composers Osnat Netzer and Kathleen Ginther. The ensemble, known for its dedication to contemporary music, brings these diverse pieces to life, offering a rich tapestry of sounds and styles. One of the highlights is a new piece by PhD candidate and composer David Clay Mettens, inspired by a collection of Japanese poetry from the 9th to 11th centuries. Presented by the Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition, this event promises a unique and immersive experience, celebrating the innovative spirit of modern chamber music.

Grossman Ensemble presents "Tapas"

The CCCC’s resident group of contemporary music specialists, the Grossman Ensemble, presents new compositions exploring relationships, textures, and electroacoustic elements mixed with elements of jazz, blues, and other cultural influences. Composers David Bird, Vivian Fung, Felipe Lara, and Gabriel Novak each introduce their new work with accomplished conductor and champion of new music Jeff Meyer. Celebrate the close of the Grossman Ensemble’s 2023/24 season at an after-party with the artists.

Four works brought to life over the previous nine-week workshop cycle receive world premieres from the CCCC’s Grossman Ensemble — “some of the best contemporary players in the city” (Chicago Reader). Composers Gregory Beyer, Sean Shepherd, Melinda Wagner, and Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon offer a program of contemporary music featuring an array of sonic landscapes, rhythmic complexity, and colorful expression, led by returning conductor David Dzubay. An after-party with the artists completes the evening. 

The Grossman Ensemble, the resident supergroup of the Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition, premieres four new compositions developed during their unique nine-week collaborative workshopping process. Conductor Georgia Mills leads the ensemble through a rich program showcasing the harmonic detail, colorful timbre, moodiness, and lyricism of composers Sungji Hong, Jeffrey Mumford, Andreia Pinto–Correia, and Justin Weiss. The audience and artists are invited to mix and mingle at the after-party. 

The Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition, known for its collaboration between composers, conductors, and musicians, begins the season with an exciting performance by the resident Grossman Ensemble, soprano soloist Kristina Bachrach, and special guest artists. Conducted by one of the leading figures in modern music, Brad Lubman, the program includes Unsuk Chin’s gripping seven-movement work based on scenes from fairytales Akrostichon-Wortspiel, and Arlene Sierra’s energetic Ballistae, inspired by ancient artillery machinery. CCCC commissions of Brad Lubman and Ramon Lazkano receive world premieres.

Grossman Ensemble+

Critically acclaimed conductor Timothy Weiss “is at the epicenter of a contemporary music hurricane” (I Care If You Listen). Weiss returns to the Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition for a second opportunity to work with the Grossman Ensemble on four new works. The Ensemble performs commissioned premieres by Jason Eckardt, Sarah Gibson, Kurt Rohde, and Augusta Read Thomas.

Grossman Ensemble with Timothy Weiss, Conductor

Hailed by the New York Classical Review as “one of the most important conductors and musicians working within contemporary music,” David Fulmer combines forces with the Center’s resident Grossman Ensemble to present a concert of four world premieres. The program features new pieces by composers Du Yun, Keith Fitch, Yuting Tan, and the Center’s Postdoctoral Researcher Ania Vu.

The Grossman Ensemble, comprising “some of the best contemporary players in the city” (Chicago Reader), takes the stage for its first concert of the 22-23 season. Oliver Hagen leads the Ensemble in the world premiere of four new works created through the group’s unique collaborative workshopping process.
