Jupiter

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre is a preeminent professional theatre in Florida, renowned for its commitment to performance, production, and education. It operates as a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) public charity, drawing over 100,000 patrons annually in the tri-county area. The theatre is situated at the corner of State Road A1A and Indiantown Road in Jupiter, Florida, with an annual budget averaging $8 million, of which approximately 40% is sourced from donations. Established in October 2001, the theatre's history began when the Palm Beach Playhouse, Inc., a not-for-profit group, acquired the landmark building with the vision of reviving theatre in Jupiter. The Maltz Jupiter Theatre was named in honor of major benefactors Milton and Tamar Maltz following a successful capital campaign. The renovated 28,000-square-foot facility opened on February 29, 2004, with a 554-seat auditorium, which was later expanded to 617 seats. The theatre's Goldner Conservatory offers educational programs for nearly 600 students annually, including after-school, weekend, and summer programs. Additionally, the theatre has a robust volunteer program with more than 400 individuals contributing to various functions. Recognized by the League of Resident Theatres (LORT) as Florida's largest professional theatre based on average box office income, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre is the state's only LORT B theatre, a categorization based on box office receipts over a three-year period. The theatre has been instrumental in fostering new talent through initiatives like the Emerging Artists Series (EAS) in Musical Theatre Playwriting, which has led to the development of award-winning productions and original works. The Youth Artists Chair summer mentorship program, another EAS initiative, allows high school students to direct and produce shows. Financial sustainability has been a focus for the theatre, highlighted by a successful fundraising challenge in 2012 that led to a $10 million endowment, largely supported by the Maltz Family Foundation. Over the years, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre has undergone significant expansions and renovations to enhance its facilities and patron experiences. This includes the creation of The Green Room Club Level Lounge and seating area, the Imagine Room for VIP hospitality, and a state-of-the-art production shop in West Palm Beach. The theatre's latest project is the multi-phased "Believe Capital Campaign" aimed at renovating its facilities, expanding the Conservatory, and adding a second performance space, with the goal of developing pre-Broadway and pre-national tour productions in Jupiter. The origins of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre's historic building trace back to the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theater, a cultural hub from 1979 to 1996, which hosted numerous celebrities and housed the Burt Reynolds Institute for Theatre Training. After a series of ownership changes and repurposing, the building was purchased by Palm Beach Playhouse Inc. in 2001, leading to its current incarnation as the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. The Maltz Jupiter Theatre stands as a testament to the power of community support and philanthropy in the arts, continuing to enrich the cultural landscape of South Florida.
