Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra

The Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra (BMSO) is a prominent cultural institution located in the Bismarck-Mandan area of North Dakota, United States. Established initially as the Bismarck-Mandan Council for the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the organization saw its beginnings in 1974 when the Chamber Orchestra held a successful three-day residency in Bismarck. This event spurred the desire to make Bismarck the Chamber Orchestra's first Regional Home City. By the end of 1975, there was a growing interest in founding a local orchestra, leading to the formal organization of the Bismarck-Mandan Orchestral Association (BMOA) in February 1976. This non-profit, tax-exempt corporation was created as the sponsoring entity for the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra. The BMSO's inaugural season took place in 1976-1977, featuring three concerts conducted by Loran Eckroth. In 1977, a significant development occurred when the Bismarck-Mandan Council for the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra merged with the BMOA, consolidating under the name of the Bismarck-Mandan Orchestral Association. That same year, the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony League was established, becoming a vital support arm for the Association.
