The Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra (BMSO) is a prominent cultural institution located in the Bismarck-Mandan area of North Dakota, United States. Established initially as the Bismarck-Mandan Council for the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the organization saw its beginnings in 1974 when the Chamber Orchestra held a successful three-day residency in Bismarck. This event spurred the desire to make Bismarck the Chamber Orchestra's first Regional Home City. By the end of 1975, there was a growing interest in founding a local orchestra, leading to the formal organization of the Bismarck-Mandan Orchestral Association (BMOA) in February 1976. This non-profit, tax-exempt corporation was created as the sponsoring entity for the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra. The BMSO's inaugural season took place in 1976-1977, featuring three concerts conducted by Loran Eckroth. In 1977, a significant development occurred when the Bismarck-Mandan Council for the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra merged with the BMOA, consolidating under the name of the Bismarck-Mandan Orchestral Association. That same year, the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony League was established, becoming a vital support arm for the Association. The BMSO is committed to artistic excellence, as evidenced by its high-quality performances and dedication to presenting a superior artistic product. The organization is deeply invested in serving the community and the region, demonstrated through its involvement in community projects, educational concerts, and performances in other cities, either by request or through partnerships. The mission of the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra is to enhance the quality of life in central and western North Dakota through music, offering innovative artistic and educational programming. The vision of the BMSO is to be recognized as a dynamic regional organization known for achieving excellence in music performance and education, as well as in outreach, internal structure, and resource management. The BMSO performs at the historic Belle Mehus Auditorium, a venue that adds to the cultural experience of the orchestra's concerts. The organization is led by a dedicated conductor, supported by talented musicians, and overseen by an administration and a Board of Directors. The BMSO also provides information on audition opportunities for those interested in joining the orchestra, and maintains open channels of communication with the public through its contact information.
