About Opera Fort Collins Opera Fort Collins is a distinguished 501(c)(3) non-profit performing arts organization that has been a vibrant part of the cultural landscape since its inception in 1979. With a mission to entertain, enrich, and educate, Opera Fort Collins presents professional opera productions and community engagement programs, aiming to bring the art of opera to a wide audience. History The roots of Opera Fort Collins can be traced back to 1979, when it began staging independent productions. A significant evolution occurred in 1981 when the company operated under the auspices of OpenStage Theatre until 1990. The year 1991 marked a milestone for the organization as it was formally incorporated as a performing arts company, with Elizabeth Elliott serving as its inaugural Artistic Director. The company's first opera was presented in 1992, establishing a tradition of excellence in operatic performance. Under the leadership of its second Artistic Director, Dr. Todd Queen, and Music Director Maestro Wes Kenney, who formalized the partnership with the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra, the company expanded its offerings. The expanded season included three productions: a fully staged opera in August, a concert version opera in May, and a December arias concert accompanied by a gala and fundraising auction. In addition to its seasonal productions, Opera Fort Collins has consistently added to its repertoire of events. In 1999, the company introduced a winter gala, a regional school educational program, and a regional singing competition. These initiatives have been followed by a variety of events throughout the year, including apprentice concerts, community outreach, classes for seniors and young people, and the monthly Arias 4 All sponsored by the OFC Guild. During its 31st season, the company established the community-wide OFC Chorus under the direction of Chorus Master Dr. Gerald Holbrook. Dr. Queen served the company for seven years before retiring in the spring of 2011, after which Brian Clay Luedloff took over as the new Artistic Director. The 2017-18 season saw OFC adopt a new focus, in line with trends for small opera companies nationwide, centering on a Festival of productions, concerts, and events based on a central theme. Community Engagement Opera Fort Collins is committed to educational outreach, offering programs that provide training and performance opportunities for local and guest artists in various disciplines, including singers, instrumentalists, designers, costumers, choreographers, lighting technicians, and directors. Operas are presented in their original language, with English supertitles to make the performances accessible to all attendees. The OFC Apprentice Artist program is another cornerstone of the organization, allowing Colorado State University master's students in Vocal Arts to perform comprimario roles alongside hired opera professionals. These apprentices also represent the company in its educational outreach initiatives. Support and Funding Recognizing that ticket sales only cover a fraction of the general operating needs, Opera Fort Collins actively pursues grants, business support, fundraising opportunities, and other revenue streams. However, the organization also relies on the generosity of its patrons and the broader community to sustain its high-quality performances and educational programs. Opera Fort Collins has established itself as one of America's outstanding regional opera companies, celebrated for its artistic excellence and commitment to the community. With ongoing support, it continues to keep the rich tradition of opera alive and thriving in the region.
