The Shepherd School of Music

The Shepherd School of Music is a distinguished institution located at Rice University, renowned for its exceptional contributions to the world of classical music education. The school was founded following the philanthropic efforts of Sallie Shepherd Perkins, whose lifelong passion for music and generous endowment established the foundation for what would become one of the United States' leading music schools. Her vision was realized when the Shepherd School opened its doors in 1975, transforming her dream into a reality that has since nurtured countless talented musicians. Initially operating from the modest confines of Sewall Hall's basement, the Shepherd School has undergone significant growth and transformation over the years. Its journey from inception to its current status as a premier music educational institution is marked by the dedication and contributions of its founding faculty, including Samuel Jones, the school's inaugural dean. Through interviews and articles, such as "The Cornerstone" by Anne Schnoebelen and "Dreams and Translations" by Samuel Jones, the school's early challenges, the philosophies underpinning its curriculum, and the pivotal roles of its deans are documented, providing insight into its developmental narrative. Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Shepherd School found itself at a critical juncture in its evolution. The completion of the Brockman Music and Performing Arts Center in 2020 marked a new era for the school, enhancing its facilities and offering students and faculty state-of-the-art resources to support their artistic endeavors. This milestone coincided with the advancement of the school's highly acclaimed orchestra program and its expanding opera and chamber music offerings, solidifying its position among the top echelons of music education. To align with these developments and the school's growing reputation, a comprehensive 18-month branding initiative was undertaken in collaboration with 2x4, a New York City-based design consultancy. This project aimed to create a unified brand vision and a distinctive visual identity, reflecting the school's commitment to excellence and its forward-looking ethos. The new branding was designed to resonate with both current stakeholders and prospective students, ensuring the Shepherd School of Music's legacy would continue to inspire and shape the future of classical music.
