Dayton, OH, United States

The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra is a premier musical institution located in Dayton, Ohio. As part of the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance, the orchestra is renowned for its Classical Connections series, which provides audiences with a deeper understanding of classical music through thematic concerts and explorations of composers' histories. The orchestra's Music Director, Neal Gittleman, has been instrumental in guiding these educational and engaging performances. One notable event in the orchestra's recent history was the Classical Connections concert held on February 15, 2008, at the Schuster Center. This concert delved into the history of Igor Stravinsky’s music for the ballet "Petrushka," a composition that began as a concert piece for piano and orchestra but was transformed into a ballet at the suggestion of Stravinsky's collaborator and friend, Serge Diaghilev. The performance was followed by a Question & Answer Session with Neal Gittleman, offering the audience a rare opportunity to gain insight into the creative process behind this groundbreaking work. Another significant concert in the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra's Classical Connections series was the season opener on October 11, 2008, also at the Schuster Center. This event explored the history of Franz Schubert’s "Great Ninth Symphony," a masterpiece that was discovered hidden in an attic by Robert Schumann and faced numerous rejections before finally being recognized for its brilliance. The concert not only celebrated Schubert's posthumous triumph but also honored the 2007 Dayton Daily News Ten Top Women, with all past honorees invited to attend as special guests. The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra is committed to enriching the cultural life of the community through high-quality performances and educational programs. With a talented roster of musicians and a dedicated staff and Board of Trustees, the orchestra continues to inspire and entertain audiences of all ages. Additionally, the organization offers various opportunities for community engagement, including learning performances, youth and family programs, and volunteer opportunities. The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra's dedication to excellence in performance, education, and community involvement ensures its place as a cultural cornerstone in Dayton and the surrounding regions. Tickets for their performances, which are reasonably priced to encourage broad community access, range from $10.50 to $39, making the experience of live classical music accessible to a wide audience.
