Ivano Ascari, professor of trumpet at the F.A. Bonporti Conservatory of Music in Trento, Italy, will present a guest artist trumpet recital on Thursday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Laidlaw Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. Ascari will collaborate with USA Professor Robert Holm on piano and USA Professor Peter Wood on trumpet, as well as Professor Gary Malvern, from Furman University, on trumpet. The program will include works by Italian and American composers, including the American premiere of Thomas Whitman's Elegy for three trumpets and of Unveiled by USA composition Professor David Durant.

Rowell, the director of USA Opera Theatre, is well-known for his annual performances as a soloist, and this concert should be on the calendar of every vocal music fan.

Opening the 2024-2025 USA Musical Arts Concert Series, flutist Andra Bohnet, Professor of Music, will present her Faculty Recital on Tuesday, September 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Laidlaw Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. The recital will feature two vastly different significant works – Franz Schubert’s Introduction and Variations on a Theme “Ihr Bümlein Alle,” op. 160 for flute and piano and David Ott’s Concerto for Alto Flute and Strings. The Schubert is a tour de force for both the flutist and pianist. Dr. Robert Holm, who will be playing piano said, “This is a piece that has been on my bucket list for a long time,” and Dr. Bohnet replied, “the piano part is so challenging nobody has ever wanted to play it before,” thus the occasion for performance! In the line of “and now for something completely different,” Bohnet will perform Ott’s Concerto for Alto Flute with Ott, the composer, conducting Bohnet and a small string ensemble. “It is so exciting to be performing a work like this under the baton of the composer!” said Bohnet, “and I just love playing the alto flute!”

Featured highlights on the first half of the program are from North America -- Gottschalk's "The Union," Barber's "Nocturne," three preludes by Gershwin, and "Touches" by Bernstein. The second half of the concert will have music with a South American flavor -- Milhaud's "Saudades do Brasil," Nazareth's "Odeon," and Ginastera's "1st Sonata."
