Ocean State Pops Orchestra

Providence, RI, United States

The Ocean State Pops Orchestra is a distinguished ensemble based in Rhode Island, known for its dynamic performances and cultural contributions to Southern New England. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, it was established with the goal of enhancing the region's cultural vitality and quality of life through exceptional musical performances and educational initiatives. With a mission centered on expanding public knowledge and appreciation of orchestral music, the orchestra is dedicated to serving a greater societal good. Founded in 1993, the Ocean State Pops Orchestra boasts a 60-piece touring group that delivers a rich and diverse repertoire. The orchestra's musical selections span light classical pieces, movie and show compositions, patriotic music and marches, Big Band, and other pops-style music that inspires and entertains audiences. Under the esteemed leadership of Dr. Brian Cardany, who serves as Music Director and Conductor, the orchestra has solidified its reputation for excellence in the musical arts. Dr. Brian Cardany, appointed to his current role in 2019, is a prominent figure in the music community. He also holds positions as Music Director of the American Band of Providence and Director of Bands at the University of Rhode Island (URI), where he oversees a variety of ensembles and teaches courses in conducting and music education. Dr. Cardany's influence extends beyond URI as he directs the South Kingstown Community String Orchestra and the Rhode Island Recording Ensemble, supporting aspiring composers. The Ocean State Pops Orchestra is known for its extensive performance schedule, which includes more than six concerts annually. Venues range from municipal and corporate events to private parties, regional and national conventions, and town fireworks displays. The orchestra also offers smaller ensembles for hire at private events such as weddings and corporate galas. In addition to its summer performances, the orchestra presents holiday-themed concerts in December and participates in benefit concerts that support other nonprofit organizations, including those dedicated to Alzheimer's research and support. The orchestra's Board of Directors and staff are comprised of dedicated individuals who work alongside a talented group of musicians. These musicians include principal players and section members across various instruments, such as Violin I and II, Viola, Cello, Bass, Flute, Piccolo, Oboe, English Horn, Bassoon, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Bass Trombone/Tuba, Timpani, Percussion, and Piano. The Ocean State Pops Orchestra remains a beacon of musical excellence and community engagement, embodying the spirit of Plato's belief that music gives "soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything."
