The Gamm Theatre

Warwick, United States

The Gamm Theatre, located in Warwick, Rhode Island, is a prominent professional theater company renowned for its compelling storytelling and dedication to addressing significant contemporary issues through its productions. Founded in 1984, The Gamm has established itself as a cultural asset in its 39th season, known for its versatility, vision, and a willingness to challenge audiences. The theater has a history of presenting a mix of world and regional premieres, and it has been recognized with numerous Elliot Norton Awards from the Boston Theater Critics Association, among other accolades. Under the artistic direction of Tony Estrella and executive leadership of Jason Cabral, The Gamm has become a destination for critically acclaimed productions that draw talent from both the local community and beyond. The theater's intimate setting is utilized to engage and provoke audiences, presenting an eclectic season that spans from naturalistic works to epic narratives, making classics feel contemporary. The Gamm's educational programming is a testament to its mission, promoting lifelong literacy and enriching the cultural and civic life of the community. These programs cater to thousands of K-12 students and underserved audience members annually. The theater also offers humanities forums and post-show talkbacks to further enhance the intellectual and cultural dialogue within the community. Originally founded as Alias Stage by a group of actors from the graduating class of Trinity Rep Conservatory, The Gamm began its journey performing in abandoned mill buildings in Providence's Olneyville neighborhood. In 1994, with the support of a new board of directors, the theater moved to a garage space in the Jewelry District, where its reputation for quality performances in challenging and sometimes controversial plays grew. In 1998, the theater was renamed The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre, or The Gamm, in honor of the late actress and arts supporter. The company experienced significant growth in audience size and renown during its 15-season tenure at an annex of the historic Pawtucket National Guard Armory. The Gamm's 34th season in 2018-2019 marked its move to a permanent home at 1245 Jefferson Boulevard in Warwick, offering a newly renovated venue with more seating and improved facilities for both artists and audiences. As a proud member of New England Area Theatres, a bargaining unit of Actors' Equity Association, The Gamm continues to be a vital part of the region's cultural landscape, bringing world-class theater to Southern New England, including Rhode Island, Connecticut, Greater Boston, and the surrounding areas.
